you guys are just talking about the north of Mexico... border cities.... The rest of Mexico is awesome... i live here (i´m both Mexican and American, dual nationality)... everywhere is great. there are tons of beautiful safe places. I would never want to live anywhere else. the people, the food, the culture, the freedom!... no crazy rules, love it!!! come to Mexico! =)

Shorty,
I work and live in el Paso, Tx. I go to Mexico about once a month for bussiness for the last 8 years, Often traveling to the Capital City of Chihuahua and I have never had a problem. Other than the heightened secutiry, more checkpoints, and understandably the very serious attitude of police and military at the checpoints. I would venture it is safe to say that unless you are somehow related to drug dealings, Mexico is as safe as it ever was and probably even more so due to the increses in law inforcement through out Mexico especially along the border. However there is something to be said for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and around the wrong people. Drug dealers dont advertise who they are and blend in to the local surroundings. So the guy in front of you in the taco line could be the big boss of the area and has a price on his head... a car drives slowely past.... the windows roll down..... you hear a hissing sound then a snapping sound.. people start to scream you drop your sombrero and hit the deck slow crawling for an open door way cursing yourself for ever going to mexico...... Or.... you can get some great deals and some very nice weather maybe even a bargain or two at the local shopping market mae some new friends and have a great time....... Bottom line it is bad there it has been bad for a while now.. there is an all out turf war to controll the drug routes... just think and Keep your eyes open and It is no different that going to a new city in the USA.

I am an American with three kids. We moved to Playas de Tijuana in January. If you are a drug dealer or involved with the cartels, then yes, it is very dangerous. If you are looking for trouble, you will find it.
If you keep to yourself and be aware of your belongings and your surroundings, you will be okay. DON'T TRUST ANYONE!
When I go by this advice, I feel safe. My kids, husband and I go to the beach, parks, restaurants, stores and a church that is right on the border.
Don't act like a tourist. Don't get so excited about things, looking and pointing. Do NOT wear expensive clothes, jewelry, shoes, purses, etc. Don't appear to have money, keep your money in a hidden pocket and keep a little bit in reach. It's better to keep small amounts hidden in different pockets or elsewhere. Never let anyone see how much money you actually have, because people are desperate and it's all about money here.

I would strongly advise against going there. There is a huge war going on. Assassinations and gunfights are a daily occurrence. Amidst the chaos of the drug war, criminal gangs are on a spree of kidnapping, carjacking, and extortion. The crime is rampant. Stay away.

You'll be taking your chances. The country is in deep trouble and drug lords run it now. Of course you can get into trouble anywhere but crime is much more prevalent in Mexico these days. Can't you go somewhere more local? I hear there are other places in Mexico that are safer like Cabo and such. Pick an area that is tourist dominated. Now's not the time to go hiking to explore the Aztecs!

YOU SEE ME? Hi HATER =)
