Is the U.S. safe right now? Just as valid a question. Before moving to Mexico, I lived in one of the safest cities in the U.S. Still, a tourist was murdered in the parking lot of the neighborhood drug store, 2 women were kidnapped from the parking lot at a nearby mall, 2 female employees of the hospital where I worked were murdered IN the hospital! And my house was robbed twice. Think about all the crime you read about in your local paper...yes there is crime in Mexico. It is worse in border towns. Use our common sense, do not visit in or stay in border towns. The rest of Mexico is no more dangerous to U.S. citizens than the U.S. is. If you d not deal with drug dealers, hang out in bars in the middle of the nite, flash your money or otherwise act incredibly stupid, you will be fine...just use same common sense you do in the U.S. There are certain parts of certain cities you would also avoid there. I am a single American woman, travel alone, never have a problem...and am always treated courteously. Also, REAL cops drive real cop cars and wear uniforms. If you are ever stopped and unsure...pull into a parking lot or store or house driveway...don't stop for any old car or truck with a siren-type sounding horn. In Mexico, many people have horns that sound exactly like cop car sirens...ignore these!!! It is not illegal to have these...they use them to honk at you if they are impatient to get past you. I always think it might be a cop behind me, but when I look in the mirror and there is not a cop car there, I know it is just some guy with one of these siren-sounding horns in his car...and ignore them. A real police car LOOKs like a real police car here...keep doors locked...people sometimes also pretend to be cops in the U.S. and pull people over too...would you stop for one of them? You have heard about these...they have a reg. car, stick a red light on the dash and have a fake badge. Or would you drive to a safe location first? The great majority of crime in mexico is between drug dealers. |

It depends on where in Mexico you plan to stay...
I'm from Mexico city and i can assure you its a dangerous city (like all major cities in the world, eg. New York, Paris, London, etc) but it's not to to get too worried specially for tourists, it also depends on your travel habits, if you're normal and dont carry any luxurious items ( a camera, an i pod, your mobile is ok) i mean jewlery or you are someone who likes to show off its obvious you will get assaulted.
Mexico is a beatiful country and has the same risks than any other country. Be calm and enjoy your visit |

Depends on where you go. Is the United States safe or not? Not really ... not in Detroit, New Orleans, Washington D.C. or East St. Louis.
I drove through Mexico and it really wasn't bad at all. It wasn't as nice as driving cross-country in the United States, no doubt about that, but it just wasn't all that bad and parts of the country are very beautiful. There's no doubt that anywhere right across the border is NOT a place you want to be right now. If your family is headed there then it would really be in your best interest to head in the other direction and go vacation in Canada.
But if you are going further down south then you'll be fine. Enjoy your visit. |

I don't mean to sound rude, but I hate this question. I hear people asking it all the time. Mexico is the same as anywhere else. They may have more problems than some places, but don't go out at night alone (just like in your own city), don't walk down back alleys alone (just like in your own city) and be wary of the people around you (just like in your own city). I have been to Mexico MANY times and lives in Mexico city for 2 1/2 years and NOTHING ever happened to me nor did I see it happen to anyone. |

Mexico has been unsafe for many years and continues to be. I live in South Texas and even the Mexicans in our community will not go to Mexico for any reason whatsoever. People disappear all the time from our side of the border (the American Side and not just from Tx) and end up in unmarked graves in Mexico. Or discarded on the road like garbage. They take young men and women and children and abuse them sexually and either kill them straight away or toture them to death. They rob tourists. They kidnap and hold people for ransom more than you will ever hear about in the mainstream media.
The only way to avoid it, is to stay home. It is stupid to head straight into hell willingly. |

Mexico is REALLY unsafe right now. I would just recommend NOT going. There's American's being killed and kidnapped all the time right now. |
