You don't have to have one.
However if you are flight delayed and miss your cruise departure and need to catch up to your cruise in another port, you can't unless you have a passport.
So, to be safe. You should get one.
Also, if you become ill and need to fly back instead of finish your cruise you will need a passport.
Another option would be to pre-night at the departure port so that you don't miss the ship. |

Well, you got 3 different answers...so here is the scoop. The regulations state you only need a passport if you are flying. However, many cruise lines are requiring passengers to have a passport. So...you can read the government regulations at the website listed below. ..then also call you travel agent or cruise line and ask what they are requiring. |

All US Citizens need passports if they're travelling by air or sea - if you were to drive over to Mexico or Canada, at least for a few more months that's the only exception. |

What Erin said... that would be the only reason you would need a passport before January 2008; thereafter you'll need a passport to travel just as much as you need a license to drive...
Look at it this way, if you plan traveling outside the USA in the future, then it will be inevitable in attaining a passport, so might as well get it now and be prepared early than late. |

If you were flying--yes now BUT CRUISING you don't have to have one until 2008!!! |

If you depart from a US port and return to a US port, NO you don't need a passport if you are a US citizen. You do need 2 forms of ID. A photoID and birth certificate.
