I'm aware of the new passport restrictions regarding air travel to and from Mexico, Canada and a couple of islands in the Carribean, but I'm not certain about walking across either the Canadian or Mexican border.
Maybe someone who works for TSA reads this. I know that someone has the answer. Thanks.
Sometimes they [US... customs? I dunno what they're called] just want to make sure you're really a US citizen before letting you in the States when you're returning.

Passport is not enforced yet, but in the past I've always shown a copy of my birth certificate and ID to cross.

MEXICO required a passport or birth certificate from U.S. citizens....the U.S. WAS going to require a passport too, but there is now a temporary reprieve.
