If I wear shorts/t-shirt in Mex. in JULY, will locals spot me as a tourist? |
I'll be in Mex. City, Puebla and Veracruz this summer, where I hear it often goes up 90+ degrees each day. I want to dress comfortably to COPE WITH THE HUMIDITY, but at the same time I don't want to be instantly recognized as an American tourist. What do the LOCALS (I'm a male) usually wear during the summer months (jeans/khakis/shorts/etc.)? What would you recommend? Thanks for your help!! |

Don't matter what you do, you will be spotted as a tourist immediately. True story, I was in a very remote part of Venezuela where my wife and I stopped at a beach side resturant for something to eat. I ordered our meal, which was a sandwich and french fries, completely using spanish. I was born and raised in very south south Texas and am fluent in spanish. (Read, write and speak) We didnot utter a single word of english during the whole time, not even between the two of us. As the waiter walked away after taking our order he turned to me and said "Ya'll want catsup with the fries?" Yep! they will spot you immediately. |

If you don't want to look like a tourist, wear...khakis, t-shirts, etc. Also, don't lug cameras around or any type of bookbags, plastic bags only. |

Depending on what you plan to do in Mexico City. If you are going to areas with high tourist affluence, such as Teotihuacan, Templo Mayor, or Zocalo to walk around, people expect to see tourists, and you won't be treated poorly if you wear shorts.
I agree w/my compadre in that if you go to any church, you should wear pants. Also, in the evenings, definitely wear at least jeans or khakis if you are going out to eat, and especially if you're going out. Mexico City is not the most formal of cities, many people wear jeans everywhere, but shorts are still not that common amongst the locals unless you're exercising or are 12 years old. |

I'm not sure why some folks are so opposed to being spotted as tourists. If that's what you are, that's what you are. In the parts of Mexico you plan to visit, shorts are acceptable but not necessarily common. Middle-class Mexican youth tend to dress much like middle-class U.S.A. youth, but older mexicanos tend to be more conservative. In less cosmopolitan parts of the country, it may be seen as inappropriate to wear shorts or tank tops. On the flip side, it's a rare venue in Mexico that requires anything approaching formalwear. Be respectful if you visit churches, of course. Basically, be comfortable but be aware of your surroundings. Oh, and if you're traveling with young women, know that if they dress skimpily, it will likely be noticed in ways they may not appreciate. |

what is your complexion like-- that a give away, also the cloth that you wear, fashion shirts, are they of proper fit. but don't worry I'm sure you will run into or even spot some other tourist like your self. also if you order some coke specify REFRESCO DE COCA COLA [refreshment of coca cola] other wise no tell what you might get. lol |

In Mexico, the only time you wear shorts if your going or coming from the gym. As of late, things have been changing, but it's still not as common. If you are traveling to a beach city(cancun, acapulco, puerto vallarta to name a few) then it is more acceptable since even the locals will wear shorts on a regular basis. anywhere else, yes you will stand out like a sore thumb. So jeans, or khakis will work, with what ever you want to wear for shirt. |
