Yes you do because starting Jan. 1st 2008 every US citizen needs a passport to go out and come in back to the USA. You better get eberything clear before you take off.

Right now you do not need a US passport to cross back to the US.But by 1/1/2008 yes you will need the passport. I go from Monterrey,N.L. to Brownsville, Tx at least once a month and I always carry my ID along with my birth certificate to prove my US citizenship. I would advise you to do the same. Have you applied for your passport? right now it is about a 4 month turnaround time to get them and it will get worse as the deadline gets near. The passport office has an express service for an extra fee. the turnaround time on that is 1 month.
