As per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) mandated by the State Department, you will need a passport to re-enter the United States after December 31, 2006 as in your case here returning from Mexico. |

No, a birth certificate will do. That will change the 1st of the year, though. For more info, check: http://travel.state.gov. But I recommend a passport, it'll just make everything faster and simpler. |

No, you don't. You would need a copy of your birth certificate, but not a U.S. Passport. |

You will not need a passport until December of this year. You will need a CERTIFIED copy of your birth certficate (with raised seal) along with a state-issued picture ID (such as your driver's license).
Please see www.travel.state.gov for more information. |

If you're thinking about a cruise to Mexico or the Caribbean or a flight to Canada next year, consider this a warning.
If you don't have a passport, get one. And do it soon if you want to beat the year-end crush.
Without a passport, you won't be able to board a cruise ship or plane if you're traveling internationally, even to destinations that haven't required more than a driver's license or birth certificate in the past.
Starting Dec. 31, a passport will be required for travel by sea or air to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Central and South America. By Dec. 31, 2007, a passport will be needed for all international travel, including land crossings such as the Tijuana border.
U.S. State Department officials say consumers appear savvy about the new requirements, which are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to strengthen border security. So far this year, passport applications have increased 30 percent over the first six months of 2005.
Anyone who doesn't have a passport could be left standing at the cruise dock as their ship sets sail.
"People may think they have their cruise all taken care of," said Bob Sharak, executive vice president of the Cruise Lines International Association, an organization that represents the industry. "But if they don't have a passport, they're not getting on the ship."
If you're planning to travel, you should apply soon. It takes about six weeks to get a passport, although you can expedite the process for $60, plus overnight delivery charges -- but that's in addition to the $97 it costs for the passport.
Here's how to apply:
- Download application form DS-11 from the State Department's Web site: travel.state.gov/passport. Click on "How to get a passport." Forms are also available at local post offices.
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship.
- Present proof of identity, such as a current driver's license or government ID, and your Social Security number.
- Provide two color passport photos.
- Pay the fees: $97 for anyone 16 and older, $82 for anyone under 16 (all children, regardless of age, must have passports).
- Take the forms to any passport acceptance facility, such as a local post office or county or municipal office. To find a nearby office, click on www.iafdb.travel.state.gov.
First-time applications must be done in person; renewals can be done by mail.
Remember, some countries won't accept passports that are due to expire within six months of your arrival.
The State Department is expecting a rush of applications later this year, but says agencies should be able to handle the increase.

From the Mexican Embassy in the USA:
All Western countries and some Asian countries, because of their investments and bulk of trade with Mexico, have visa exemption agreements and enjoy certain facilities in some categories, tourists being the easiest of all as they can get their tourist card from the airline. However, they need to come personally to our Consular offices for their travel documents if they intend to carry out a profitable business (ordinary business contacts can be done on the tourist card issued by the airline), or perform technical councelling for a Mexican firm; this rule also applies to students and some other categories such as foreign correspondents. They cannot accept a job in Mexico, nor engage in a paid activity without a special permit from Mexico City.
From the one in Canada:
Canadian citizens do not need a visa to travel to Mexico, but they do require a "multiple migratory form" (issued to tourists, transmigrants, visitors, business-people, and advisors), known as a tourist card. This may be obtained at any Mexican Consulate, during direct flights to Mexico, or at the Mexican port of entry by presenting any of the following as proof of citizenship:
Valid passport (the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade highly recommends that Canadians travel with a passport),
OR
Proof of citizenship and photo ID.
Proof of citizenship includes original birth certificate, citizenship card (naturalization certificate) or a notarized affidavit of citizenship (a statement under oath before a notary public, commissioner of oaths or lawyer identifying oneself with another document, stating date and place of birth, and reason for not having an updated passport or original birth certificate). |

You will need a temporary permit (tourist card) which you can get there at the border. It costs about 20 dollars and will last 180 days. If you are staying less than 7 days don't bother paying. It is free and don't let them try screwing you. They'll do it. Beginning 2007 you WILL need a passport. So if you are traveling after that you might want to start the process now. Good luck be safe and have fun. |

We travel to Mexico pretty often by car, and to avoid hassle (spending extra time answering questions, etc), I say get a passport, you will need them by December 31, 2006 anyway -
This is from the US dept of State:
Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. |

Very good question. As of January 1, 2007, all People holding US passports will need to show them going in and out of Mexico. This is a slow post 9/11. Go ahead and apply and get your pictures as described on the form. They are good for 10 years and should be carried at all times when outside the US.
