The problem with the water is that is not like in the U.S so you wont be accustomed to their water so the likely hood that you can get sick is high. Stick to bottled water. As far as calling to the U.S. you should avoid using the phone in the hotel you stay at it will cost you a lot more than if you went and bought a calling card from lets say a pharmacy or you could buy one from the guys that sell the excursions in the hotel you stay at they also sell them. Depends on how much time you want it can be as cheap as 10 dollars and you can call for a decent amount of time to the U.S. And dont use the calling cards in the hotel as this will also cost you an arm and a leg. Instead go out of the hotel and use a pay phone which normally are the pay phones that are from "Tel-Mex". And last you should know is to use common sense just as you would in the U.S. never flash money around.. Thats it have fun.

I DRNK THE WATER IN MEXICO I AM STILL ALIVE, DIAL 001 AREA CODE AND NUMBR NO BIG DEAL, MEXICO HASMANY THINGS AS THE SAME AS USA SO YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY I LIVE BY THE BEACH AND WONT GO BACK TO USA,P EOPLE ARE N.ICE AND HELPFULL, UNLESS YOU BECOME THE ARROGANT GRINGO WHO LOOKS DOWN AT THEM, THAT THEY DO NOT LIKE, BE FRIENDLY AND TRY TO SPEAK SPANISH, THEY WILL HELP YOU MORE

Don't ingest the tap water. It's perfectly fine for brushing teeth, showering, or bathing/swimming if you don't swallow. This also means be careful of ice cubes - make sure they're purified - they'll have holes. This is almost a non-issue for American tourists since hotels and restaurants don't get rich by making their guests sick. They almost always provide bottled or purified water and ice.

You'll hear stories about Federales and Policia. You're pretty much safe if you don't get drunk or act stupid. If you do have a problem don't try to bribe them - that will only get you in more trouble. Just remember you're in their house and be respectful.

I recommend not driving at night. If you do drive don't get attached to where stop signs are - they're portable. If you're in or near a city the public transport is good. It may not look as nice, but it gets you there. If you take a cab set a price before you get in, don't use a meter. Pretty much common sense everywhere - if you don't know where you're going you don't know when you're being driven in circles to get ripped off.

If you need to dial out of country from a hotel there will be directions on the phone or the front desk will help. The rates are very high.

There is nothing wrong eith the water unless you go to a really small town. to dial to the US jut dial the number.

dont drink the water.
even when brushing your teeth. use bottled water and bring tons and tons of sunscreen.

don't drink the water this includes ice in soda or drinks, bring Imodium ad just in case, don't eat raw or under cooked veggies. don't leave money or passport in your hotel room, your best bet is a safe deposit box behind the hotel desk. you can drink bottled or packaged water safely
