Wow, you have so many wrong answers. If you're traveling by land a passport is not needed. A government issued photo ID and birth certificate is enough. This law changes in June though and then you will be required to have a passport.

We used to enjoy fairly open borders with Canada and Mexico, only requiring a driver's license to get back in. NO more!

If your from the US you need a passport to get back in in US. Passports take a while to process so plan early. And good luck
