Well, I see that you've only researched so much about this... We have highest, high, medium-high, medium, medium-low, low and extreme poverty. I'm not rich but I can allow me to eat in a decent restaurant once or twice a week so I'm not poor either. I guess it's related with education. People with money can go to nice schools where they meet other people with money, they work for each other, they get recommendations so they start high in almost any company and when you're high it's easier to go higher. Poor people can go only to regular gov schools (if any) and most of them don't finish their studies because they have to work to support their family, they start from the very bottom and not a lot of them can go up in their company. It's not all the goverment's fault, we are more than 100,000,000 people, we could do something together to change our situation but I guess the rich people (the ones with power) are fine whre they're at. |

actually we have medium class too and what you say happens in the poorest parts of Mexico in the big cities and in other places, the big part of the population is Medium class...Mexico is not the country that you imagine but we have to work to make a better country ;)... |

In America why is there just the rich and the poor that are both supported by the middle class? |
|

it's the way the US is becoming... the middle class dies off when the economy is weak |

I think you have it wrong cause i'm middle class. I'm not rich nor poor and most of the people in my city is living that way(Monterrey).
But in capitalism, yes, out rich people get richer, and yes, our rich people also spend hard times where even if they loose their business, they still have money from their investments.
I still wonder though, how poor people manage to live in this very expensive city. But the most logic answer is that there are goverment programs that gives them support(like food) for free.
This is the situation in Monterrey. Probably it is in the main cities of Mexico like Mexico city, Gudalajara, Tampico... etc. But there are cities, of course, where there only exist poor people that live thanks to the rich people of that city in particular. |

Hi dear, we also have middle class, and some in between.
There's extreme poverty, but with the bening weather people can survive easier than in other parts of the world under the same economic conditions, in some states where the soil is very rich, one can plant whatever and have a nice tree to feed one's family.
There are not only 2 social classes that's for sure. You are disregarding millions of people with your statement.
Government is complicated to explain, you'd need to have at least a seminar about Mexican history to understand a little bit about it. Corruption happens everywhere power is present, it happens in your country for sure, I am positive about it, and I don't know what country are you from. It just has different levels of influence. |

it depends where people in mexico are from like people born in the village own farms, drop out of school, and have no cars and in the city people go to work for a living, go to school, and have cars... |

Well you see Mexico is way ahead of the USA in that. The American gvt. tried aggressively from 1981-1993 to destroy the middle class and again from 2001 to the present. The middle class in the USA is huge compared to the Mexican middle class which has been growing for the past 30 years and is really beginning to strut now that we have had progresive presidents since 2000. |

The problem is much bigger in Mexico than the USA! I have many friends from Mexico and, while they love their country, many have stated that it is better to be poor in the USA than in Mexico. They will let you starve in Mexico if it comes to that point, they will turn you away at a hospital, at a church, etc., etc... Mexico is quite the dog eat dog society and systematic corruption is rampant to the point that the government (well many of its officials) are more than willing to kick a man while he is down. They are a wonderful people (I myself am of Mexican heritage), but they have no qualms about using their upper hand once they achieve it! |

Mexico has like 35 % of middle class, this was one of the arguments that helped settle the aproval of Nafta, since it means like 35 million people market.
Why Mexico is poor? now there is not a formula for develop a country. each develop country had their circumstances and managed to get out of poverty in their own way.
The first reason is purely economical Mexico,
South of Mexico for example does not have a lot of industry, the economy in this states depends mainly in basic raw materials and agriculture, there still a lot of farmers that produce for their own self consume.
This type of economy polarized society since the profits depends partially on low salaries that the owners of big plantations take a big advantage of, therefore you will see in the south very rich people, and also very poor people. Those jobs also do not required a lot of technical skills or knowledge and due to low education of the people in this areas ( 2-3 years of elementary school), that chains them into this kind of jobs and poverty.
In parts of the country where industry exist and Municipalities like San Pedro in Monterrey or Benito Juarez in Mexico city income per capita is similar to some develop countries in Europe, the field is already settled for development but the supply and demand of jobs take a big part of the equation, as soon some of this regions is getting investment running and new jobs appear, people from the south emigrated in large numbers and therefore wages can not grow since there is a lot of people willing to work for less, like is happening right now in Guadalajara.
The second and most important is education.
Education is key for a better job here or there, take a look in Monster.com and look for a clerk vacancy job, then try Secretaria in Mexican occ.com.mx, now see the difference between salaries,
Now try that with some Engineer (ingeniero)……..the difference will be smaller between what an engineer will earn in Mexico and the one in the USA, and if you start putting Mba, or Phd, the difference will be even smaller.
Mexico has a better standard of living in cities like Chihuahua, where the average education is 7 grades compare with Cordoba that has only 3.
Now if you compare that with the 12 grades plus that the USA has you will see what I mean.
The Third is the government.
Mexico has been run since before 2000 by people who almost had absolute power over everything, made elites of people who only seek for their own benefits, in this scenario corruption and other problems can easily occur since no body is asking for results making laws breakable, impunity is one of our biggest problems.
In democracy however, there is always some politician looking out for the mistakes of a rival, and ready to come up front with it to the people.
The fourth will be tradition and history.
Almost 10 % of Mexican population still lives as Native Americans, and they have kept their old ways of agriculture and other obsolete methods of subsistence , a lot of them are the ones who live under the poverty line…..they don´t believe in wealth the same way the westerners do.
History
Mexico lived during the 19 century under constant civil wars, and some other wars, it did not stop until 1880, when a dictator came to power and ruled Mexico for 30 years, economic recovery started but in the early 20th century another civil war started to overcome that dictator, the war stop after 10 years and had later another civil war ( cristeros) in the 1920´s . then we had something we called Corporativism where a single party ruled the country for 70 years, but wars stoped.
In 1990´s an institution was created with citizens IFE who is today the institution that watch over Elections and finally in 2000 we had our first democratically elected government. |

When you have a society that lacks industry that pays it workers a good living wage than there can be no middle class. Many corrupt government like Mexico find it much easier to control the people if they are forced to rely on government social programs for their existence. Mexico will soon no longer find itself in that position with a large portion of the criminals and poor illegaly immigrating to the U.S.. Although Mexico is a democracy to a point the majority of the people lack a quality education and the military and federal police exercise a strong hand to control elections. So the people are left with very little and not much they can do about it.
The U.S. is facing the much same problem just not yet to the extent you are seeing in the third world. Our corporations are exporting American job to other country's to remain competitive. Remain competitive means they can't pay middle class wages and still stuff their pockets to the brim.
The difference in the U.S. and Mexico is our people are educated enough to understand the system but are to lazy to hold government accountable. Hear we have the opportunity to engage our representatives and hold them accountable for allowing these kinds of things to happen.
With a two party system you can make a difference if you care too. The Republicans support big business and no one takes them to task about their policies. The Democrates want a one class sociailist form of goverment and it's in their best interest to get everyone they can on public assistnce.
We need ever American to get involve and select congressional canidiates that support the will and best interest of the people no matter which party they belong to. Vote for good honest candidates not party BS, but vote. |
