Is Cancun safe for an 18 year old male to travel alone?

He is staying in an apartment but will be out and about.

It all depends on how mature he is. As long as he doesn't befriend strangers, go out drinking or partying, keeps himself in the public eye, speaks the local language and minds his own business he should be safe. Mexico also has a high kidnapping rate, sad to say, so he would want to keep on his guard. You may want to check out the US Travel Advisory at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html for any possible warnings for that area.

10 years ago when I was traveling the country as a lone 18/19 year old girl, I found myself in situations that were scary and if it wasn't for my quick wit I could have gotten hurt. I've was able to visit 19 states alone but now for the other 31 I'm taking my husband. I've learned its better to be with someone else that I know.

Simple answer here really.

The hotel zone is utterly safe as long as you stay on the legal side of everything. Alluring (for an 18 year old) opportunities to not be entirely legal WILL present themselves - and those opportunities are fraught with danger.

In the city, one must add to that, that there are safe and unsafe areas, just like in any other metropolitan area. Unless you know which are which, it's better to travel mostly during the day, and keep your wits about you, just in case you accidentally stumble into an area which is not so hospitable.

Mexico is still a poor country, so rules for foreginers will still be different than rules for locals - and the Mexican folks that live in and around Cancun are some of the kindest and most helpful people on the planet, but in case you just don't get it, they can't be expected to save you from yoursef.

Of course , just travel smart. Cancun is very safe.

=)

Safe how?
He will be legally and adult, so he can drink and do whatever adults do.
So... it will be the proof if he has been raised well.
Cancun is safe for the most part, but so many tourists make it a place where... well, loose morals apply (sex, alcohol, drugs, etc) so, it depends on his character and education.
Kidnappings... i´ve never heard of one in Cancun (al least not of tourists).
He will have fun... maybe too much fun?

nicolee,
Yes he will meet many friends but he has to be careful in clubs and stuff. Cancun is pretty safe compared to Acupulco.

gerardo
sure just tell him to take the usual precautions

Victor S
Yes... I live in Cancún and is a safe place, In the world there is good people and bad people. If he is educated he will know how to behave. Here as USA exist there temptations speak with him about that. Sorry for my bad english.

beti book
It is perfectly safe if he behaves.... There is a lot of security in the hotels and the hotel zone, he have very rarely had cases of violence or crime in Cancun, but remember thet it is a touristic place, full of people, from many countries, wanting to have fun. Sometimes fun means, visiting an archeological site, snorkeling, playing golf, lying on the beach, renting a scooter... But for some people having fun means breaking the rules.... getting drunk, looking for drugs, sex and so on. The seasons when this happens the most are american spring and summer break which is march and june-july. You know your family and you will be the best person to decide, and give good advise before sending him.

Depends....can he defend himself? Does he go to places that he might be in harms way? Not an easy question to answer.

Is your 18-year old mature? Does he know right from wrong? Will he be able to choose the "right"?

If your answer to ALL of these questions is Yes then by golly let the kid go to Cancun without you!

If your answer to No to any of the questions then he shouldn't be traveling anywhere without your supervision.

Cancun is very safe if your son knows how to handle himself.

juriscoyote
If you are an american which I am sure you are, please do not come to my country, do not send your kids here, don't visit us, we do not need you, stay in palm beach, or what ever the hell you gringos stay.
