Is Cozumel a good place for a family vacation?

We have 3 children, ages 13, 10, and 5. We're planning a family vacation for this winter. Typically we do Disney World, etc for an action packed vacation that brings us home exhausted. We would like to try something a little different this year. We are wondering if Cozumel would keep us busy and have plenty to do for the ages of each of our children. If anyone has been there with similar aged children, can you tell me how it went and give us some ideas as to what we should do when we're there? We're particularly concered whether the 5 year old is old enough to really enjoy it. Or if someone has some ideas for other spots, that would be great, too.

It is a great place for families. The beach & the hotel pool can be a great place to have fun with the kids, specially the 5 year old. There are also some family tours, expeditions that you can go to.

Cozumel is AWESOME... Its great for any age... you can do tons of excursions (I totally recommend the "Fury" group for a deleuxe sail and snorkel and beach tour) and its great for any age... the older people can drink the free beer and margaritas, you can go snorkeling, you can do a dolphin swim, encounter, etc you can go hang out at the beach (which there are many) and you are only about an hour ferry ride from Playa Del Carman and about an hour from the tulum mayan ruins and an hour or so from Cancun... There is a TON of things to do and I totally recommend it as I was just there only 5 days ago... The snorkeling was spectacular... the fish were awesome and the sand was pure white... so yeah go and enjoy it.. and take the opportunity to go see the tulum ruins... WOW... you can even snorkel and hang at the beach there as well... and it won't be too exhausting this time... email me for pictures from cozumel if you would like... shaun_tara_forever@hotmail.com

Hi,
Me bride and I have vacationed in Cozumel three times and enjoyed all our trips. Your family will enjoy the island and that's a guarantee. To save you some cash you might consider flying into Cancun and taking public transportation to Playa del Carmen and then onto Cozumel via the ferry system. The public bus which is a coach with AC, from the airport to Playa del Carmen will take a little over an hour, for a cost of $8.00 each one-way. Once in Playa del Carmen you can catch the ferry to Coz for $16.00 each one-way the 5 year old might be free.
The ferry runs one the hour from 5am to 11PM daily. Once on the island you are all set, just take a local taxi to your hotel. If you don't have a hotel I would recommend Park Royal it's real close to the town of San Miguel. Email me and I can give you my contact at the Park Royal and he can get you a family deal.
You will not have a better time. You kids will ahve the time of their lives. One place you will enjoy is Chankanaab Park. This is a family park that has a lot of activities. One activity will be swimming in the lagoon with all the local fish. There are a number of beaches that are all about family swimming and snorkeling.
Rent a car and drive around the island and see all the beach sites on the backside of Coz. One stop is the Punta Sur lighthouse.
The Cozumel Museum in downtown San Miguel is also a good family trip.
All the hotels offer the All-inclusive plan which takes all the guess work out of food and drinks. My bride and friends enjoyed the Park Royal with the three pools with swim-up service and the beach into the Caribbean sea.
