Yes, it will be fine to go during that time. CancĂșn is in a tropical climate so the weather really doesn't change that much. You can expect the daytime temperature to be around the mid 80's and at night the temps. will be around 70 during December. There won't be hardly any rain and you will have beautiful blue skies and nice temps. It will be very nice during that time. It is also a slower month for tourism so you will be able to have a nice relaxing xmas vacation. During xmas or as they call it in spanish Feliz Navidad they put up xmas trees and lights all over the resorts and it's really festive and neat. They have palm trees so it's neat to see the palm trees with xmas lights on them. It will be a fine time to go and the weather will be beautiful. You will enjoy xmas vacation in CancĂșn.
As far as tips...let's see...
1) Only drink the water in the resorts and bottled water. If you drink water from any other source you will probably get sick.
2) Take the bus service for any of your transportation needs and try to stay away from the taxi service it is kind of expensive.
3) call your credit card companies and let them know that you will be out of town in a foreign country because if they see a lot of spending on your card from a foreign country they will cut it off so make sure you let them know you will be in Mexico.
4) to make a better experience at the resort just throw a few dollars to the help. I usually tip the bartender, maids, and anyone else that is helpful...they work real hard to make sure you enjoy your stay and appreciate a few dollars...they will be your best friend and give you anything you want
5) relax and enjoy your vacation
Things to see and do:
If you want to do any sight seeing I recommend going to Chichen-Itza and/or Tulum...they are Ancient Mayan Ruins
Also, Xel-ha and/or X-caret are neat places to visit. They are ecological nature parks where you can see beautiful animals and wildlife and even swim with the dolphins.
Other fun things include just walking around the hotel zone. There are tons of shopping areas and also I suggest checking out the local flea-markets. It's basically all the locals selling handcrafted items of Mexican culture and you can get some neat things.
Other than that parasailing and/or riding sea-doos is fun and even if you wanted you can visit Aquaworld.
There is something to do for everyone in CancĂșn and you won't be bored. There are tons of things to see and do.
As far as All-Inclusive....YES, I STRONGLY recommend that you take advantage of it anytime you can. You will be glad you did. It makes it so much easier and it's a lot nicer. So, yes definitely get all-inclusive...you won't regret it!
I'm not sure if you booked your trip or not yet, but if you haven't you should consider staying in a Riu hotel/resort. They are one of the better chains in CancĂșn and you and your family will love it. They treat you very nicely. There are three in CancĂșn: Riu CancĂșn, Riu Palace Las Americas, and the Riu Caribe. All are all-inclusive and very nice hotels.
Enjoy your vacation and have the time of your life...CancĂșn is the best! |

I send many families to learn Spanish in Playa del Carmen which is 45 minutes from Cancun through: http://www.spanishabroad.com/family/pdc.htm
December is a great time as you are going after the hurricane season which provides for a drier and of course safer climate.
All inclusives are great if the price is right. We arrange host families so I am more apt to answer questions relate to that, but I would just be sure make sure you know what your all inclusive will include so you are not surprised when you get there to find out all inclusive doesn't necessary include all that you might have thought it would. You definitely want good air conditioning as it will be quite warm around that time.
You can check out projected weather forecasts at the following link:

I am from this part of Mexico (Cancun) and have spent most of my life vacationing there. In Mexico going all inclusive is always the best way to go as you will find you end up spending more money the other way. This way you and your family can eat and drink all day and not have to worry about that expense.
An additional tip for you... if you want to save a little bit of money and also want to go to a more family oriented place you can always travel an additional 30-45 minutes and stay in Riviera Maya (which is a smaller more family oriented vacation spot just like Cancun). There is less of the crazy college clubbing crowd here and more families.
About the weather, it's an ok time of year to go. It will be a little bit more humid and there maybe a few times throughout the day where you may get some tropical rainstorms during that time of year. The good thing is that at least you will not be there during hurricane season but will be experiencing the weather shortly after. |
