Yes Mexico is a VERY DANGEROUS tourist destination. 30% of all "non-natural" deaths of U.S. citizens outside this country happen in Mexico! To read tragic vacation stories as well as links to Gov't websites visit:WWW.MEXICOVACATIONAWARENESS.COM |

"I heard Americans are literally shot down in the streets amidst drug turf wars."
You heard wrong.
Get away from the border towns and some neighborhoods in large cities and you'll be fine.
However, if you go to a border town like Ciudad Juarez and walk around at night screaming, "Hey Seta, I'm here to take over your drug operations!" Then you'll probably get shot down. |

Just avoid the border towns. I know Mexican nationals who don't go to the border towns and will only drive through them in the early, early morning hours. It varies by location. Places like Cancun and other destinations that cater to tourists are still pretty safe. |

I have been to to Juarez all the way down to Cancun. Although there is some drug wars going on around Juarez or Tijuana, It is doubtful you would be attacked. I would advise if you are planning to vacation there to just stay on tourist places. You don't want to go walking through any neighborhoods at night. Don't drink any water, or juice, that is not bottled. I got diarrhea for 2 weeks. |

no more than anywhere really,,i have found in my time there that most mexican crime away from the border is mexican on mexican crime there are political struggles that do not involve us and we are not welcome to be a part of..the border area is and will remain dangerous until we close it the way we should.
most mexicans love americans and mostly our money which they want us to spend.i have always been treated exceptionally well especially by merchants and service personnel ie hotel staff store owners and the like,,as in any big city here in the usa i would not wear flashy jewelry or expensive cloths and never carry or flash around large amounts of cash,of course you don't go with people you don't know or to places of a seedier nature as with here your only asking for trouble.most tourist areas have there share of pickpockets and con artists but this is the 21st century and it is what it is.the real mexico, what we call off the beaten path is a wonderful and lovely place with people who go out of their way to share their rich culture and heritage, once again as with anywhere there are a few rotten apples.
use the same common sense in mexico you would use visiting new york city or any city usa and you should be fine. |
