Yes, the drug violence is out of control, and the smart tourists are going elsewhere.

I've lived in Mexico City for about 15 years and I've never been mugged or anything. And no, I do go to dangerous neighborhoods. I go to the Colonia Doctores all the time (I've even been there in the night and at wee hours of the morning) and I've never had anything stolen.

However, I agree about pickpockets. Part of the reason why it hasn't happened to me is because I'm not stupid and careless. I know a lot of people that got careless and got their cellphones stolen in the subway. Keep your wallet in a front pocket or at least have your hands touching the wallet. If you travel by subway alert regarding your wallet and cellphone, you can turn around when a pickpocket is trying to grab from it.

A lot of mexicans like to wear their backpack on their chest while travelling in places filled with people, pickpockets can steal stuff from your backpack when you're not watching (however it has never happened to me and I travel by subway all the time with a backpack).

If you follow these suggestions (oh, avoid walking alone in a dark alley in the middle of the night), chances are you won't get mugged. Most people I know that were mugged were flashing money or using their laptops on the sidewalk at night. Just use common sense, Mexico City is a big city like LA or New York, but it isn't nearly as dangerous as the US media loves to go bonkers about.

FYI, places like Tepito and Iztapalapa are very dangerous at night unless you're specifically travelling with a local that knows all of the muggers and such. Tepito is just an ordinary street market during the day though but do use pickpocket common sense if you do go there.

Oh, one other thing, people in Mexico City are animals when it comes to driving. If there's a bridge, use it. It's good exercise and decreases the chances you'll be hit by a car going at 65 mph. Be careful crossong streets, cars can come out of anywhere (ironically I'm very careless when I walk around and yet I've never been hit by a car yet.. people say I'm inhumanely lucky haha).

Have fun!! Oh, while you're here, go eat some real Tacos al Pastor with a sangría Señorial soda. They are insanely delicious. Insist that they put pinneapple, fresh basil and onion in your taco, a Pastor taco just doesn't taste the same without all of the toppings.

There are a lot of pickpockets if you ride the subway during the rush, and in some of the really busy mercados too. If you have packages while you are going around the city shopping then always make sure to keep them in your sight. As with anywhere, try not to stand out with lots of jewelry, and do not flash money as that is bound to draw unwanted attention. If you are careful, use good judgment and stay in safer areas you should have no problem and come away with a fantastic experience. Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world and thus has a ton of things to offer from the metropolitan (museums, theaters) to the historical (pyramids, castles, churches) with just about anything else in between.

You should watch youself in Central Park too!

If you don't planning on making drug deals you are safe.

Princess Lizzy
NO! Just take the necessary precautions as you would do on any trip anywhere in the world!

You will be fine.... Make sure your bag is close to your body, preferably a slim bag that can cross over your chest and rest at your side.
You should always have another person travel with you no matter where you are.
I have found that most Mexican people are kind and gracious.
You will have corruption anywhere in the world so you just need to use caution and be a smart traveler.

Don´t walk in the streets after night, try not to use public transportation and try not to go to places like Tlanepantla or Tepito, keep to the turist locations and don´t speak to strangers.
Sorry to tell you this but there are robbers in every city...

SOUTH LAKE
Don't wear jewelry or a good watch.

Never walk at night unless you are in a large group

Watch for pick pockets in the heart of the city, especially when you exit a bank or a money exchange house .

Don't brag or speak about any possible money in your family because kidnapping has not gone out of style in la Ciudad de Mexico .

The air is contaminated and cool even in the summer so take a sweater and try not to breathe too hard.

What is wrong with you?...Mexico City is the largest city in the world so of course you should be careful. But it depends on what parts you go...make sure your on nice parts of Mexico cause the crime rate has gone up a bit.

thegetaway31
Yes, you should be especially careful at night. Places such as TJ (Tijuana) are fulled with corrupt cops. Dont wear anything fancy. Dont go out late at night and always be accompany with someone.

The gated resorts are the only way to go if you want to be sure to visit there and leave with your safety and health intact.
Cancun is probably one of the best and most popular and they have all of the local culture without the dangers of wandering around in an uncontrolled city.
