Yes it is. There are a lot of problems in the border and northern areas because the Mexican police are on a holy tear after drug dealers...this is good. Crime happens everywhere, and is certainly no worse in the majority of Mexico than in the U.S. I am an American living in Mexico and the amount of crime reported to be happening in the U.S. is alrming to hear here! You need to NOT hang out in border towns, bars in the middle of the nite, or with drug dealers...you need to use common sense, just like you do in the states. A couple of days ago, someone asked about crime in Mexico. That question got some very good answers, so I am putting the link to it below so you can read those answers too.

Yes, Mexico is safe for Americans to travel to. June of 2006, I moved to Interlomas, from Olympia, Washington. While it's not quite like my beautiful home, the "Evergreen State", it is safe and actually has a lot of modern conveniences. And they line the streets with trees, all throughout the cities. Well, from what I've seen so far. They've got McDonalds, Burger King, Tony Roma's, Costco, Office Max, Office Depot, VIPs, and many other familiar businesses. There are some places, like any country, where you might want to stay away from, but generally, a person can discern for themselves and act accordingly. I've walked in Molinito at night by myself and had no problems, but I'm also 6'4" and tattooed and have long blond hair, so, they prefer to stare at me and wonder if I am a rockstar. haha If you stare at people, or make rude comments to your friends about the locals, you may end up fighting, so, behave and have manners and courtesy. People here are actually pretty friendly once the ice has been broken. I noticed a lot of people always greet everyone with a good morning (buenas dias), good afternoon (buenas tardes) and good evening (buenas noches) and when meeting friends, etc, they greet with a hug and slight kiss on the cheek. Pretty cool, really. People here are more festive, or so it appears to me. Tradition is big here. And the food is GREAT! But always look at the kitchen if you decide to eat at a restaurant. If it's clean, go for it. If not, say "Gracias" and walk away. As for the drug lords, well, yeah, there's been trouble there, but in the almost 2 years I've been here, I haven't seen any troubles face to face with them. Maybe if they legalized certain things, then the troubles wouldnÂ´t be there. The US and Mexico, both. It's a cultural country with many old ways and traditions. Very beautiful. But then again, there are also places that haven't been so much in the way of beauty. If a person plans their itinerary, then things should be just fine. Check out the pyramids if you go. Wow!

IÂ´m from Lima Peru. So we kind of know about unsafe places, but trust me, Mexico is as safe as any latinamerican country.
Any where this days, is not very safe, for example, here we hear about the news in small, and not so small US cities, where teenagers kill their mates, or any people in the malls. And and least me, I wouldnÂ´t stop going to US because of those facts.
The same in Mexico. I donÂ´t know whatÂ´s the whole deal about the border cities.. they are more safe than Mexico city. I just spent a month in Juarez, and I felt very safe, yes you see people in some streets asking for money, but donÂ´t tell me that in latin america we are the only ones with poverty.!
Mexico is worth to visit and not just one time, but plenty. IÂ´ve visited 4 times mexico, and I know that I wanna travel around other cities in there more many times.
DonÂ´t get confused about the media and news. You gotta see it for your own eyes.

The dangerous zones of Mexico are Mexico City and the border with the USA. We have drug problems because the USA donÂ´t do anything to solve the drug traffic problem in his territory , and the adictions of his people .
so Â¿The USA is safer for a Mexican?
And you are estadounidensens is spanish, America is a continent from Canada to Argentina not a countrie.

yes, don't worry, some chubby mexican wearing a sombrero and a pancho isn't going to jump out of the bushes and use you to smuggle drugs in your butt. thats what the mexicans are for.
and i disagree with the laredo comment.
i'm from laredo and i travel there frequently, and to nuevo laredo.
you'll get scared by the short funny looking military men, but they won't do anything to you, as long as you're not doing anything bad.
but nuevo laredo isn't very...touristic.

Weeeeellll, some parts yes and some parts no. I wouldn't book a weeks tour in Laredo, but Monterrey is a hugh metropolis, and it's a very safe place to travel to and stay. Hell, I , as an american, have lived there for the last 14 years and feel perfectly safe there. I would fly in if I were you though. I don't want to even begin explaining the toll road.

It's a 3rd world country, a lot of it is poor, as long as you are carefull and keep your wits about you, you will be fine
Stay in tourist areas, and do not flash money, or stand out in anyway to the native population.
