Mexico City is not more dangerous than many big cities. If you go to London you may feel safe in Westminster, but not if you go to Brixton.
The same can be said about places like New York City, Rome and even Paris.

Not really, is more the bad fame than the reality.

Mexico City is full of culture, museums, party and sports, a lot of night life and a great parks for children.

Is just that is very big and chaotic, and people from other countries with more small and ordenate cities feel intimidated but a new yorker could feel just like home.

You have the same risk as if you was in any other huge city in the world.

Don't know who is or why this thing about making my country so dangerous right now, off course there are troubles and places where you don´t need to be, but is not like we are under a civil war or something, you can visit Mexico city, and try to stay away from trouble using common sense and will be fine, really the media is making a bigger fuzz of what its really going on right here

No, it's not..... forget about the "Man on fire"-like crap, things are not that bad even though it's true that some places are having an unusual level of violence, but that does not include Mexico City...... we're just as (in)secure as always, you have to be sensible and take precautions but there are million of people living here and tons of tourists visiting and things are just fine.....

PS.- Read the article that LE ANTOINE suggested, it's cool!!

Many questions are answered by people with no personal knowledge, based on what they have heard.

I had been to Mexico many times staying 3 to 7 weeks at a time. I had visited 17 states but had avoided Mexico City.

Last year on the web I saw a place with short-term apartments available in Mexico City at a good price. I checked with people who knew the city and all agreed that the apartment was in a good area.

So I rented the a studio apartment for the month of August. I had a copy of Moon's Guide to Mexico City. It explains which areas to avoid. For the most part, there is nothing to see in those areas.

I used Turibus to become familiar with the town. Taking the Metro (subway) to the center was a bit of a hassle from where I was staying. I gave the bus system a try and quickly became comfortable using it.

In general, I became use to Mexico City and felt safe. After dark I limited my self to areas close to my apartment, not be cause I feared other areas, but because after exploring full day on foot, I was tired at night and also intersted in the politics back home. At my request, my landlord added CNN in English to the cable TV at no extra cost.

We have problems as any other big city.

But if you use your common sense you can stay safe without any problem.

Good Luck.

well I was born in Mexico city and almost all my life I've been living there.

Since 10 years ago we have seen some changes in security and actually it has not improved.

The press is doing some extra work for handling the image without having real sources. Of course we still have safe places such as the downtown.

The drugs subject is something that is becoming more popular and more dangerous.

The country of Mexico is indeed much more dangerous than normally it is. So far as Mexico City is concerned, that is their capitol city and it is located most of the way to Guatemala. I have heard little talk about it from the media. The heightened alerts apply to half of Mexico, mostly to the North half.
