Is Mexico really as dirty and poor and nasty as people say?

In the very rural areas of Mexico there are both extreme poverty and ugliness as well as extreme happiness and beauty. It depends a lot on on where you go and who you talk to. Many rural areas have maintained their life styles, customs, cultures, etc. The people may be poor but they have pride and joy in their families, communities, customs etc. In other areas people might have become more material driven and they see more negatively the lack of material wealth.

In Mexico City for example you can see some of the most beautiful places in Mexico and the world for that matter. Ruins of ancient cities, the pyramids of Teotihuacan, the Zocalo plaza, Reforma Ave, the museums, murals by Diego Rivera, Chapultepec Castle.

You can also see the daily efficiency and business center of Mexico: Polanco, the gleaming steel and glass towers of commerce, the factories that belch smoke and produce, the Metro subway system transporting millions of people each day, the buses and taxis jostling for position in the streets packed with traffic, the street vendors hawking their wares, people on their way to and from...

And of course there are the poor areas and neighborhoods. But even where poverty reigns supreme, there is hope and the hustle and bustle of life continues. Children go to school, people fall in love, children are born, couples get married, life is celebrated through parties and family gatherings.

Mexico is a great and beautiful country. It has a great history, wonderful food and nice people.

Dirty? Poor? Nasty? Well, what is your source? What people are saying that? People are trying to get out of it? What the heck!!!! I mean, there are some poor, dirty, and nasty places, the same way as in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and anyplace you wanna tell. But there are also some very nice places, wealthy places, natural beauties.

You should define what is "people", cause if people are the typical ignorants, you should refine your sources.

Obviously it depends on where you go.
There are some places that are incredibly beautiful and are in good shape.
And then of course there are the areas that are less than desirable.

No. Mexico is not as dirty, poor and nasty as it is showed in american movies or TV. Although, as many people said here, it depends where in MÃ©xico you are.

And it is FALSE that everyone in MÃ©xico wants to cross the border and go to USA, we are more than 100'000'000 mexicans here! only 5'000'000 in mexicans (born in MÃ©xico) are in USA. Many "mexicans" in USA are, actually, born in USA from mexican parent or grand parent!

Prof said it beautifully. I would add if you want to see the phony touristy resorts, and if you think that is beauty, to each his own.

The rural countryside and the villages and the towns and the cities each have a particular beauty. You can drive down a street and see a huge modern factory with rows of little shops and stalls next door. You can see horses being ridden down city streets, and farm animals wandering along the side of the road. You can see plants and flowers you only find in floral shops growing wild along the side of the highway. You can wander through ruins that are thousands of years old and shop at shiny new boutiques or at little roadside stands with some of the best produce you will ever eat. You can drive through desert, and mountains and jungle and cloud forest and farm land and along beaches...

The people have a special dignity and pride. They are as caring, joyous, and incredibly kind a people as you are likely to find anywhere. And noise, oh my they do love noise. And just as you find with any other group of people, they have their share of bad apples.

Unfortunately the economy is suffering, much like the U.S. economy but on a larger scale. When you can't find work and you can't afford to feed your family, risking a border crossing seems worth the risk.

Hello, Who said that?, I'm from Mexico and I live in Guanajuato, Guanajuato, It's a beautiful city and I love my country, there are many poor people, but we have magic places for living or dreaming, many mexicans are really happy here, I've visited Canada and Unites States and I don't change my country, people here is friendly and nice.

Its a cliche, just like we think that in france everybody uses stripes shirts and berets and eat croissants at little cofee shops in front of the eiffel tower haha. Mexico has everything, very poor zones and very beautiful landscapes, it depends where are you visiting. I think Baja its the best of the country (desert with incredible beaches that you wont see anywhere else).

BTW, not everyone jumps the fence to get to US, i havent met anyone who is in US illegally, most people who do it are poor and ignorants who thinks thats the easy way to get money.

Poverty is still a big problem in Mexico. There are a large number of people who spend their day picking through the Mexico City Dump to find things they can use or resell. Read the World Bank report on poverty in the link below. What can you do to help? Go to Mexico, but go to the poorer states like Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero and spend some money. Don't go to the resorts where the corporations that own the hotels make most of the money. Go to San Cristobal de las Casas where the family that own the hotel will spend the money they make in that community and help the economy.

People getting out? I know people going back. It really depends on where you go, imostly go to the forest in the mountains.

Its only depends on where you go. A lot of the unknown places are because they don't have money to fix there towns up. Major vacation site are pretty nice, but you still encounter the occasional peasant there.

Well It depends a lot from what parts of Mexico you visit.
In the north of Mexico is dry and some people are like ignorant.
But in the center the history, culture, and technology combines making an exiting picture. But if you like the nature and pre- hispanic culture, going to the south is the best option.
As I Said North are in some ways like they paint them. Im from Mexico and I know all the south provinces so I can tell you Mexico is A beautifull country no a dirty and nasty as some people think
