Is Mexico safe to travel to? |
So I've been hearing a lot about Mexico being unsafe at the moment, something about drug wars?
Anyway, my friends and I have a trip planned to go to Mexico in mid July (A little suburb just outside Mexico city), and we're also going to Ixtapa beach for about 4 days.
Can anyone tell me more about the current situation in Mexico? |

you'll be fine, unfortunately the border towns and northern states, sinaloa/durango are the ones that are rife with violence thanks to the unceasing demand for drugs in the north. |

you wouldn't want to drive much in rural areas on your own if you don't know where you're going - bandits'll block roads and rob cars
drug wars are violent because drugs are illegal
legalize it and those elements will not be able to compete with a free market and lose all of their money and money=power, voila, end of drug gangs
p.s. they were called "rum runners" up through the 1930s, then they came to be known as "NASCAR" |

Well if you want to travel around Mexico city, I do not recommend you to go to "El barrio Tepito" is the most unsafe place in Mexico city and if you mean outside you should go to Puebla which is a very traditional and safe place to go. there are lots of "charros" there Or you should go to Teotihuacan and see the Pyramid of the sun the highest pyramid in all mesoamerica.
About the "drug wars" Felipe Calderon is attacking this "narcomenudeo" issue so in Mexico city is very common to come across with police officers and gang members in a conflict
If you want to go to Mexico city you should go to Independence Angel and el Zocalo ( safe places)
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is a very safe beach.
So go to Mexico you will enjoy it very much |

Most of the drug problems are in the north - I've travelled to various parts of Mexico over the last few years as a 20 something woman with other friends and never had any problems. Just use your common sense like you would in any big city. Ixtapa is the most beautiful beach i've ever seen. |

Mexico is ok, violence and crime is everywhere. Here in Mexico news said USA is very dangerous and viceversa in your country.
Never EXCHANGE your money at airport, and don´t bring in cash more than 100 US. If you can find a mexican tourist guide will be better so they can tell you which places are unsafe.
Enjoin your trip my friend! |

Hey, me and my friends are driving to Mexico city about the 3 week in July, were going to party for 2 weeks all night long. DO what we do, anybody pull a gun on you shoot them, if they pull a knife, cut them, if they try to rob you rob them first |

The violence you're talking about is actually occuring on the frontier, with the drug cartels, but if yor go to the beach there's ok... it's like a whole different world in there... don't be afraid ;) |

I've am currently traveling all over Mexico with my family, we heard a lot of the same warnings but we've come to find this is the safest country we've ever been to. Possibly even safer than the USA. Everyone here is really nice and willing to help if you run into problems. I have seen no sign of drug wars anywhere in Mexico over the past 4 months but there has been lots of protesters. They are called Zapatistas but don't worry they are PEACEFULLY protesting the government and welcome tourists, so you wont be in any danger. I hope this helped and have fun! |

You know, the situation you are describing in Mexico is true in some areas. But if you want to be really safe, try going to a well-populated tourist area, such as Cancun, because you'll feel safe around the other people. |
