..ANA..

Is Tijuana really that dangerous? =(?

I am going to tijuana in a couple of weeks, however I have been hearing all these crazy stories that are happening over there that im starting to get a little freaked out.. Ive been to Tijuana a about 6 times, the last time was in August 08 or so....It was safe for me I had no problems just like the other times I went.... And actually a few days before there had been a shooting but i didn't know until i got there... So, now im going probably staying for 4 days but this time i will be staying in a hotel (the marriott Tijuana) since I cant stay w/ family like before...but all these scary stories are scaring me!!

Has anyone recently been to Tijuana? should i go? I also heard that all the wars are with the drug carteles so as long as i have nothing to do with that should i be ok

The recent news reports have been about the unprecedented number of drug related crimes and deaths in the cities and towns closest to the US/Mexico boarder.

As is when you travel anywhere (be it within the US, Canada, Mexico or abroad) use common sense.

The US State Department website has available the following information:

"While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business), violence in the country has increased recently. It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable."

"The greatest increase in violence has occurred near the U.S. border. However, U.S. citizens traveling throughout Mexico should exercise caution in unfamiliar areas and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Mexican and foreign bystanders have been injured or killed in violent attacks in cities across the country, demonstrating the heightened risk of violence in public places. In recent years, dozens of U.S. citizens have been kidnapped across Mexico. Many of these cases remain unresolved. U.S. citizens who believe they are being targeted for kidnapping or other crimes should notify Mexican officials and the nearest American consulate or the Embassy as soon as possible, and should consider returning to the United States."

Also included is a list of Consulate offices, Consulate Agencies and the US Embassy. As well as websites to check and numbers to call for more information.

843 murders last year. i don't believe they can all be drug related. don't forget, it's not just the narcos causing mayhem. it's also organized and unorganized crime factions at work. kidnapping is big buisness, sometimes the criminals demand and get 2 ransoms before the poor relatives realize they will never see the victim again. do alot of research and if you still go maybe take your own private army. i have to laugh at all the people that think if they're not in the drug trade the'll be ok. there are innocents caught in the crossfire, people who witness events they aren't supposed to see, women raped and murdered(read about ciudad juarez) in gang innitiations and on and on. good luck!!

Don't go... especially to Tijuana. Mexico is really dangerous right now. There are a lot of kidnappings and drug-related crimes. My friend recently told me 43 people were killed in the past week or so. We were worried because we're going to Puerto Penasco and were discouraged because of all the crimes. The place I heard to definitely stay away from is Tijuana. BE CAREFUL! Definitely don't go alone, if you still decide to go.

Right now yes because of the drug war since it is a border town.
