Yes, a passport is still required if you are entering the USA by bus or by car and please make sure that your passport is a valid one.
Please keep in mind that in case it is going to expire within the next couple of days, then I highly recommend that you renew your passport before traveling.

No, you do NOT need a passport to enter Mexico and return to the US by land, either by car, by bus or on foot. You need a birth certificate (certified copy or original) and a government issued photo ID (such as a driver's license) to get your Mexican FMT tourist visa at the border crossing. Make sure you go into the immigration station and get it and pay the fee (it was $23 US two months ago).
The current passport requirements only apply if you travel by plane or ship. They will be expanded to cover land entries sometime next year. The date is still uncertain, especially since the glut of applications after this year's new law caused severe problems for the passport office.
Just make sure to dig out your birth certificate and have it with you and enjoy your trip.
