Cancun WAS an island, it is now more like a peninsula, they joined it with two bridges and now the part between Puerto Juarez (where the people from Cancun live) and Cancun is joined.
In the laguna (the piece of sea between both lands) you can find nice crocodiles and very few fish, on the other side of cancun you can find the reef and the open sea.
So both are correct, it is and it is not an island, lol.
