Is cruising dangerous during hurricane season?

No, I go all the time during hurricane season and have cruised when there were hurricanes. It is completely safe. the captain constantly monitors the weather, whether or not it is hurricane season. They will navigate away from the storm as best as possible. If it is a hurricane, they will go around it to avoid it.

If you go during hurricane season, you may notice some differences over other times. The main thing that will be different is the water. It will be more rough than other times of the year, if there is a storm. Personally, I've never had any problems with this and I've been out with waves at 20+ feet. If you are worried about the seas, bring some sea sickness medicine along, the ship also has some. But this is a good idea to bring anyway.

The other things that may be different are the ports. In some cases the captain may not be able to go into a port that was planned because of the weather. In most cases they will go to another, nearby port, but in some cases you may miss a day at port. Also, your cruise may end up being shorter or longer than expected. A few years ago when I was on a cruise, we had to return to a different homeport because of the whether. So we were at sea a few extra days to get there. But they may also have to cut the cruise a few days short.

Regardless of what happens on the cruise, the staff will make sure that you are always happy. And the captain will make sure that the boat is kept out of any danger. There is no need to worry. However, if you do get motionsickness or anything like that, be very cautious about booking during a stormy season, winter can also be bad with cold and warm fronts causing storms.

I'm from Cozumel, and it's not. If a big hurricane is approaching the cruises will generally either sail away from them or stay docked...

Probably not. Cruise ships are expensive beasts - the captain and crew will go somewhere else rather than risk damage to the ship or upset to the passengers. But if you book during hurricane season, be prepared for last minute changes in your route and stops because of weather. You might not go to the ports or islands listed in the brochure. Or you might get cancelled completely and re-scheduled. If you have to go during hurricane season, consider buying trip insurance.

Well you may or may not get lucky. However, have you ever been on cruise ship in rough weather? I got knocked out of bed and wanted to puke the entire time. Choose the time you go wisely!

MattCan
No, not generally. Hurricanes are big storms, but there is plenty of advanced notice of when they are forming and where they will go. Cruise companies re-route trips in progress or cancel cruises that cannot be changed to avoid hurricane impacted areas.

Naturally 'hurricane season' does not apply to the the vast majority of the planet where huuricanes are rare or non-existant, so most cruising itineraries are not impact in any case.

It would have to depend where the cruise ship is. Usually when a Hurricane warning is issued;ships at sea tend to ride out the storm but a cruise ship could go to the nearest port.
