If you are careful it will be OK. Just do not get in to conflictive poor parts of the city(colonias).

'Mexico City has been and continues to be Mexico’s very heart as well as the historical and cultural capital of the Americas. Since its foundation by the Aztecs in 1325 its has been a meeting place for diverse cultures.

Mexico City is one of the largest and most dynamic cities on the planet; a conglomeration of legendary as well as modern cultural-origin myths; and it seduces and fascinates all who experience and enjoy it.

The city conserves both pre-Hispanic constructions, witnesses to the richness of the cultures that originally emerged in the Valley of Mexico, as well the architecture of Mexico’s enigmatic colonial period. Hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, museums, galleries and entertainment facilities also abound.

You’ll find useful information and tools on this site that will let you enjoy, discover and experience Mexico City, the “capital on the move.”'

you just have to know the city, like where to go and where not to go. so you should not go out alone in places you're not sure of. it's best if you go out with your friend.

As safe as any major city. Don't flash money, get drunk and stupid. Many wonderful things to see in the cradle of Mesoamerican civilization. Bien viaje

The city is like any big city, compare to NYC if you are an American. There are good parts and bad parts, and certainly places to avoid after dark.

If you don't draw attention to yourself by your dress or behavior, you improve your safety. Americans who talk loud, wear shorts and tshirts, and get drunk publicly are targets.

When in doubt, stick to public transportation during the day, stay on the main streets, and be cautious what you carry with you.

All that having been said, I've been in the City for three weeks and haven't seen the first sign of violence. Police on every corner might have something to do with that.

Perfect, stay with your friend all the time. Do not wear fancy things. Just look average. I am sure your friend knows what to do and where to go in a safe way.

There are so many things to admire in this spectacular city full of palaces, aztec ruins and impresive museums. Good trip for you.

Best luck
