If you stick to major resorts they usually use purified water for their ice machines.
Some cities, like Puerto Vallarta, actually have better and safer water than the city I'm living in right here in So. Calif.!!! That's according to warnings we get from the water company each month with the bill...
Anyway, when we are in PV we get several 5 gallon bottles of water.
At restaurants, we usually get bottled water.
Other than that, I've been all over Mexico, 24/7 at various cities, towns, pueblos, etc. Felt safer there than when I have to drive through or to Los Angeles!!!
Food won't make you sick unless you try some really spicy stuff that is good food, it's just that your system isn't use to it.
Drinks are o.k. Just common sense the same as if you were in a bar in Miami or Chicago. Don't leave your drink unattended, be aware of your surroundings, etc...
The people are friendly, family oriented, and children are the heart of a family unit. Many celebrations, etc... wonderful culture.
Try to learn a little Spanish...it'll really help.
Be courteous, friendly. It's a beautiful country. |

If you go to a popular tourist attraction the water and food should be fine. In fact the bar drinks are just as good as any drinks from any bar.
The problem comes when you're in a town that's not as civilized. I've been to Mexico a million times and I get sick if I drink their water. It's not as clean as the water here when you're in a small town or a ranch and the bacteria usually will give you stomach problems. No big thing your body can't handle meaning you won't die, YOU WILL GET THE RUNS THOUGH. People there are already used to that water so it doesn't affect them.
If you stick to places like Cancun, Cozumel or Puerto Vallarta you'll be ok. Those are tourist places and everything is made suitable for any and everyone.
Good luck and have fun!!!! |

Here is the important fact that so may people leave out...NOBODY in Mexico drinks tap water...everybody drinks bottled water. Resorts and restaurants use it for ice and food preparation also. Resorts are not stupid, they do not want sick guests. Some people forget and drink tap water or brush their teeth with it. some people get sick because they are not use to the food. some people get sick because they drink too much alcohol. You actually have no greater chance of getting sick here than in the U.S. Thee are places in the U.S where the tap water is awful and no one drinks it. I used to live in a small town in Colorado where the water tasted dreadful and often came out of the faucet brown...so I used spring water. People sometimes get sick from restaurant food in the U.S....and sometimes people just happen to get sick on their vacation. |

Uhh well, yea the water and food could make you sick, but its not because its terrible, just our bodies aren't used to the almost harmless bacteria in the water. At worst, you could get diarrhea, the stomach flu, or food poisoning. But if you're going to Cancun, as the category mentioned, its pretty nice. |

The water and any ice you put in any drink WILL make you get sick.
I visited Cancun and Cozumel a number of years ago and we always bought bottled water. The food is very good the people there watch out that you don't drink any of their ice or water when you visit their restaurants. If you only drink at the resort you are OK because they purify their water. The night life is fun, but don't over do it as like anywhere else, the creeps, robbers, thugs, drug dealers come out.
If you stay on a "strip" then you are OK. Have fun and enjoy, you will be treated good by the people there, and they want you to come back.
There very lives depend on your money! |

wow- sounds like somebodys ignorant....
yep. if you're at a resort- things should be pretty safe. stay away from water whenever you travel anywhere. its not that its not safe- just different minerals that your bodys not used to.
just be a good traveler- be curious and respectful to the culture and be aware of yourself and your surroundings. enjoy yourself if your going on a resort vacation- you'll basically not be experiencing any of mexico anyways and wont have to worry about craaaazzyyy things..... |

Just don't stray away from the nice hotel and take a cab directly from the airport to the resort. |

I wouldn't worry about the water, I would be more concerned with the amount of drug related violence that is going on down there right now. Cartels beheading police officers and such. |
