Most major banks and currency exchange houses accept dollars, pounds, and euros. You can also withdraw Mex. pesos from any ATM using your debit card.

Banks often have very, very long lines and some won't do currency exchange after 1 or 2pm and not at all on Saturdays. Currency exchange houses are open later and are much quicker and they often give a better rate.

Foreign currency, esp. US dollars are usually only excepted in large hotels, tourist resort areas, the border areas and a few stores (Wal-Mart takes dollars). For everyday use, get pesos when you are in Mexico, never exchange currency overseas, you'll get ripped off.

Don't take pesos .... get them from an ATM machine. Don't buy pesos up north unless you want to lose 15%.

Spend dollars if you don't mind losing 10% off the top in the exchange

Notify your bank (ATM card) you'll be in Mexico

In response the the above answer about people preferring US dollars...yes they do because they win on the exchange rate that way. When you using dollars or any other form other than pesos you're always going to get ripped off a little bit. Put the money in your bank and get it out with a debit card or exchange your money at the bank.

You can take Pounds Sterling, U.S.Dollars OR Pesos.. but you can get your BEST EXCHANGE RATE at ANY NATIONAL BANK of Mexico... the local BANKS will ALWAYS give the best exchange rates in ANY country.

It's better pesos, because when you go mexico you are gonna change for mexican pesos, and the relation is 10 pesos is equal 1 dollar (more less), in the mexican economy is not acepted by law, the us dollar.

The safest thing to do is to take a debit/credit card.

Nationwide don't charge you for withdrawing money abroad so call into a branch and speak to an advisor.

Get a few pesos out before you go, but withdrawing all your holiday money before you go is NOT a good idea!

Anyway, have a lovely time - I'm very jealous!

US dollars are accepted in Mexico but be prepared to receive Peso's as change. Also coins are not accepted in Mexico just bills. My advice would be to take a split of 80/20 Dollar to Peso, just in case you need to use Peso's....a charge card is the ideal choice. Exchange rates can be brutal and expect to lose lots of money that route.

When I went (and I've been a number of times) I always took US dollars, even though I'm from Canada, it was still the better way to go, and the math is easier that way, at least in my opinion.
