It depends on how much you eat and drink, how expensive your tastes are, and how much you plan to stay at the resort. The all-inclusives can range from $40-$75 or so a day, so you would have to eat and drink a good amount of quality food to make it worthwhile, day in and out.
We have condos that have kitchens, and make some of our food, and not eat in large portions. Some of our condos have the all-inclusive option, and you can often buy only on them certain days, when you plan to be at the resort.
We also eat in lesser expensive places, so for us an all-inclusive isn't a good deal. I think it encourages you to eat more, which is not a good thing for us watching our weight, or watching how much we drink! But, if you just want to have a good time drinking and eating, and not worry about it, it could work out for you. |

ALWAYS get all-inclusive if you can afford it. It's really not that much more and you will be glad you did. Even if you choose to eat out a few nights or every night it's still a good idea to have all-inclusive. If you are out by the pool it's so much easier and nicer to just walk up to the bar and get a drink and not have to carry money around and worry about it getting wet, because you are going to be in your swimsuit a lot and don't want to have to worry about carrying your wallet. Also with all-inclusive you will have transportation from the airport to the hotel. If not you are looking to spend about $60-$80 just to get to your hotel from the airport and it's not worth the 20 minute drive it takes. Most of the resorts have all day buffets so if you have all-inclusive it's nice if you want to get a snack. Also, yes if you like to drink alcohol it's better to have all-inclusive. You can get anything and everything and it's all included in the price. It's nice to just walk up get four coronas and a couple shots of tequila and return to the beach like in the corona commercials. But, yes all-inclusive is the way to go. You will be glad you did. Eating out is fun, but the hotels also offer very good food and most hotels have at least five restaurants in them. Almost any place you go out to eat at is going to cost you at least $60. If you do go out one night I highly recommend Lorenzillo's. It has the best seafood in the world and everything is caught fresh daily and you can pick out your own lobsters and it's very romantic place also. Have fun.......My advice....definitely get the All-Inclusive package you will be glad you did in the long run. Have a blast....CancĂșn rocks!!! |

I really enjoyed going to different places around Cancun to eat and not feeling tied down to the resort with an all-inclusive. There is a really funky "restaurant" at the mercado that serves a great fried crab. It's an outside eatery, but the food was great. We tried to stay away from the Americanized fast food places (Kentucky Fried, McDonalds) and went where the locals go. Plus, had to hit the Hard Rock. |

Two Words : Montezuma's Revenge. I've been to Cancun multiple times and my family has a plantation down in Tijuantapec...if there's one thing we've all learned it's to always go All Inclusive. If you eat and drink outside of the hotel there's a HUGE possibility that your food and drink has been tainted. There are certain germs and bacteria that native Mexican's bodies can handle that American's bodies can't. If you drink anything besides straight liquor, beer, or bottled water/soda then you can be exposed to those bacterium. Same goes for the food. The hotels and resorts know this, that is why they only serve bottle or filtered water in their restaurants and bars and that is why all of their fruit and vegetables are flown in from a different location. If you've never heard of Montezuma's Revenge look it up...you do NOT want to find out the hard way!! Also, not to mention the fact that it's soooo much easier to just do the All Inclusive because you can swim up to the bar, order a drink while laying out on the beach, eat whatever you like and so on without having to worry about the "tab" or how much it'll cost or anything like that. The hotel/resort has everything you need and the only places outside of the hotel/resort that serve food are either places that you can eat at here in the US(which would be pointless and defeat the point of eating out on your trip) or their a little too authentic and you are at extremely high risk of getting Montezuma's Revenge!! |

If money is not an issue then go different places to eat. They have Pat O'briens which is wonderful. They have Senor Frogs and several other nice place. If you are money concious and plan on drinking alot I would definitely go all inclusive. I remember a few years ago we stayed at a place that had an awesome breakfast buffet and just breakfast was like $25 per person. |

I never go all-inclusive if I can. I find I have a much better time and usually I spend about the same amount of money.
-------------
The Mayan Palace is a nice resort south of the airport that is not all-inclusive. They have a number of fairly reasonable options for places to eat on the resort, so you don't feel ripped off all the time. That way you can drive to Playa del Carmen and eat at the places there.
-------------
I got a small city car" Daewoo Matiz" at Budget Rental for 1582 pesos for the week which included car rental, liability insurance, taxes and fees. |

It is best to do both. Stay on the All Inclusive for two days, get some sun, drink and relax, then expand your radius and see what is out there. I highly recomend the $8 boat trip to Isla Mujeres. |

All-inclusive costs $$$. Visit the travel section of a bookstore & read. Find where the 'locals' go & you can eat fun things that are cheaper, good, tasty. But you have to take chances on food-preparation... Mexicans have tougher tummies than Americans!
Try packaging two meals a day (cheaper) & eat out for one. |
