No...it is not necessary. You may get a tourist visa good for up to 180 days on the plane or at the border if you drive. You will need a passport if you fly. I am an american living in mexico. i know people who fly to and from mexico every few months, and always just buy one-way tickets. You can use the website below to confirm this. Just enter your nationality, then your destination, then click for the info. A window will come up. Scroll down thru that info and you will say that you may travel with a one-way ticket.

I'm not sure, but once I "walked" into Mexico and stayed 3 months...I think a one way ticket will work as long as you have a passport and do not remain longer than is allowed as your visa will expire. Mexico is not a place where you want to get caught breaking any law.

Yes unless you are a citizen of Mexico or a legal resident you will need to have a round trip ticket. A lot has changed since September 11 and the new passport and other regulations.
