There is NO point to rent a car in CancĂșn. Save your money there is no need for it and I DON'T recommend it. They have a great bus system. CancĂșn is know for it's buses and schedule. They are on a five minute schedule...meaning that every five minutes there is a bus that will be at the bus stop no matter what bus stop you are waiting at. They have a lot of bus stops throughout the hotel zone. Also, think about this...where are you going to park it? Some resorts don't have parking areas for guests. Also, it is rumored that if they see American tourist driving they will try to get into an accident with you and blame you because they know you have insurance and they will try to sue you for money. They drive crazy down there and most Americans couldn't handle driving in CancĂșn. The hotel zone is always crowded and it's very narrow and tight and people constantly pulling out in front of you and cutting you off. They have enough buses and taxi cabs to take you where ever you need to go. The buses are very cheap. It's only 7 pesos or 70 cents US dollars. The taxis aren't like here in the US, you can bargain and negotiate a price with them. Another thing if you aren't familiar with the spanish language it's difficult to understand the road signs. It's not like the US. It's just not a good idea. Even most of the people living there don't drive. You can do what you want, but I've been going there for ten years and even own a condo there and I would not recommend renting a car. You would be more happy and better off to use the bus system and cabs. Good luck to you and have fun. CancĂșn is a blast!

well my opinion is that you do because you are gonna want to go to alot of cool places!!but at the same time it is very crowded so you may want to take a bicycle instead.

I would rent a car only if you want to see other things on the Yucatan Peninsula that you can't get to on a tour bus (the tip to Chichen Itza is about a 3 hour drive, but your Hotel can hook you up with a tour bus to get you there). Click the link below to see a map of the peninsula. I've driven most of those roads and never had a problem.
Takie the insurance that offered with the rental, then if there's an accident, you can call the rental company and they'll sort things out. Your California insurance will not cover you in Mexico.
If you're just going from the hotel to a bar or restaurant, buses are the best way to go.

I suggest you rent a car if you like to visit Playa del Carmen or simply the Tulum ruins. It is safe, and honestly, there are even 7Eleven's, Costco and Staples ! The distances are pretty long to get anywhere but the Bus service works also very well (every 5 minutes a bus). Taxis cost about 7-10 dollars (depending on the distance with a "taxi meter").

It is OK to rent a car in Cancun if you can be extra aware of other drivers around you, the local drivers and the international drivers who have also rented cars. You won't need a turn signal in Mexico, no one uses them or the lines down the middle of the road. Be careful! Driving the hotel zone isn't bad, watch where you park downtown if you go to the market. US insurance is no good outside the US. I would suggest getting insurance if you insist on renting a car, at least you will have some recourse. Usually if you have booked a vacation package, the hotel provides a free round-trip airport shuttle, check your reservations. Walking in Cancun is fine. Everybody walks! Taxis are going to be expensive, ask the price before you get in the car. The local bus will work too. But if everyone is walking why would you want to be in a car a taxi or on a bus?
