It is safe... if you stay away from the nasty areas...
I am sick and tired of people saying these things about Mexico. ok... let me do it the other way around
they kill tourists in rest areas in FL
they kill innocent bystanders in shopping centers
they kill people coming out of Mc D's
they rape and kill girls in schools
everyone tells me it is dangerous to visit any or all of these:
NYC
Miami
Los Angels
San Francisco
Houston
Philadelphia
....
I still travel to the US and visit some of these places... just have to be careful. |

No - stay away from unfamilliar areas, from the Metro (if you are going to Mexico City) and don't flash a lot of cash. Simple rules to stay out of trouble.
Don't listen to the media hype - it's usually a bunch of bull. |

Hi, Mexico is a nice pleace for the tourism, I live in Oaxaca,Mexico, this city is very quite, now, our principal activity is the tourism,
We have Culture, Music, food, Ecoturism, and a lot of things for to do.
The people are very friendly

It is no more dangerous to visit Mexico than it is to visit South Central LA, Market Street in San Francisco, or Harlem in New York. It is no more dangerous to visit Mexico City than the shopping mall in Utah where that kid shot and killed those people a couple of weeks ago.
Life is always dangerous. You get into a car and drive to work each day. You could be in an accident and killed or worse made into a vegetable. You could slip on a bar of soap in the shower and hit you head and drown in an inch of water. You could get audited by the IRS.
My point it no Mexico is not dangerous and yes it is dangerous. Knowing yourself, your abilities and being cognizant of your surroundings will make it safe.
I have been robbed in Los Angeles before. I have had my home in California buglarized before. I had my hotel room in Mexico City burglarized before as did 20 other guests who were Mexican and foriengers as well.
I have spent about a year's time in Mexico since 2002. I even rented an apartment in a working class neighborhood. Not a tourist area, not a place with many Americans, in fact I was the only one I saw there. If you are polite, respectful, kind, and try to communicate in the native language you will have few to no problems. And if you do try and something bad does happen, you will be helped out by the people.
You seeing the picture. In life there are no guarantees. Unless you are rich then the chances of anyone kidnapping you are slim to none. Could it happen yes. Could you be mugged at an ATM yes. Could you be shot and killed, yes. Could it happen in the USA yes, in your home town yes. In Mexico yes.
Quit worrying, unless you are going to drive into a drug lord's hacienda, I don't think you have much to worry about, except the squaks of the chicked littles.

If you go to ANY country and act stupid, you're going to get into trouble.
If you want to go to Mexico, go! Just remember basic rules (never go out alone) and don't visit bad areas. It's as simple as that. |

wtf? where did you hear this? they must have gotten the wrong information bc i go to Mexico every year and often and nothing happens thats just dumb....you can get kidnapped ANYWHERE you go....think about that.....go and enjoy yourself and dont listen to idotic people |

As an American living in Mexico City. Mexico is no more dangerous than any other place in the world. The biggest problem with visiting another country is not the danger but not being able to recognize the danger. At home you know where to go and where not to go, when to be on guard, what people and places to avoid. Mexico is perfectly safe if you are aware of your surroundings and do not act like a stupid tourist. |

mexico is NOT always dangerous...beyond the border zone anyways. but i can tell you, right now is not a good time. my boyfriend is mexican, living in mexico, and we were going to go to mazatlan this spring break. he told me not to come down, and that he would come to the US instead...they have been having major drug war issues....lots of violence. he said most of his friends had left the state of Sinaloa entirely, and had gone to the US/Europe/family ranches, just to stay away from the violence. if you want to go to the pacific beaches...don't. but if your flying, and you want to head somewhere on the east side, sure. |

Generally speaking Mexico is safe. I would venture a guess that any tourist area in Mexico is safer than most/all major US cities.
Just use common sense and you'll be fine. |

Every time something happens to a foreigner in Mexico, it makes banner headlines in the States. When something happens to a visitor to the States, you'd be hard pressed to find a single paragraph on the back page of the paper.
I lived in Mexico for 10 years and we will retire back down there. The people are the most gracious I've met anywhere and I am well traveled. If you treat the people and their traditions, culture, laws with respect, you will be treated the same or better.
Is there a chance of having a problem while you're in Mexico? Just as much as when you step outside your door every morning.

No more dangerous than than any other country. I haven't heard of tourists being kidnapped here in Baja Norte, the incidents that were reported recently had to do with local business men. Here in Baja one doesn't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Tourism flourishes. |

I just answered this recently, so I will do it again. I have been to Mexico City three times in the past all within a 6 months time frame. I hope to go back soon within the next few months. I go to visit my in-laws and if I am out and about with them I use the same precautions that I do when I go around town here in my homestate. My mother has always taught me to be careful no matter where you are-that is true for being in my hometown or being in Mexico. Where I stay is totally an un-tourist town, so I am "noticed" more when I am there, but nobody has ever done anything to me while I was there, other than stare at me.
Right now, the president of Mexico is passing many new laws and trying to make security of the country and the people a top priority. My husband just informed me that a law passed that if anyone kidnaps-no matter the situation-they will get life in prison. I know he is doing a lot to make mexico safer-not only for residents, but also for tourists.
Basically, go to Mexico if you want, just use precautions when you are out and about (i.e. dont walk alone, especially at night, don't walk down secluded roads/allies etc). I hope I get to go soon, I miss it down there. |

My family vacations in Mexico every year and even though we may be risking it to go into the local villages, we do. We treat them with respect and they do the same. There are bad areas there as well as there are in your neighborhood. Before you venture out, learn a little about the area, if you do not want to investigate the region for "safer" areas, stay at your resort. Good Luck and have fun, Mexico is beautiful!! |

Most places that are of interest to tourists are pretty safe, no place anywhere is totally safe, so just be alert. Avoid most neighborhoods with unpaved streets and the slums on the outskirts of large cities. Don't take a taxi unless its from a recognized company (one that your hotel or airport recommends). Avoid "flea market" type places. Don't be drunk in public. Completely ignore beggars and peddlers. Don't solicit prostitutes or try to buy drugs. These are the things that get most tourists in deep trouble.
Drug dealers and serious criminals in Mexico don't target tourists, because this will draw too much attention from the police. The biggest worry in most places is the sort of petty crime that happens in most tourist places - people swiping things when their owners are not looking, or are too drunk to notice. |

It's safe if you stay on or close to the resorts. They have pretty good security. Don't go to Tijuana, or wander out to the country. |

it is tense right now. i would not go unless its way down south...maybe. nope i wouldn't go.
and don't even think about going to a border town in mexico right now to party, thats where the most tension is.
