Is it really dangerous to travel to Mexico right now?

We want to go to Cancun.. and the deals are prettycheap Even 5 star resorts are great deals. But I keep hearing that the cartel is kidnapping people for ransom, and shooting cops on the street. Is this true? Any news articles on this? I would think a travel bus from the airport to one of the resorts would be prime pickings for these guys. Are you hearing the same things?

Anyone go to Cancun recently? Did it feel safe (ie: good security, no crazy gunmen running around)??

Alright, so let me start off by saying this:

1. I live in Cancun.

2. I'm American, and I've lived in Mexico almost half of my life.

3. There is a campaign against Mexico Right now so many people spend their money Inside America for Spring Break and not in other countries.

4. I Think Las Vegas is more unsafe than Cancun right now honestly :P (just got back from there.)

It's safe. Lived here for a while now and no I haven't been robbed, kidnapped, or anything. No one I know has.

Relaaaax. haha. The idea of crazy gunmen running around outside of my house is kinda funny haha. xD

Avoid Tijuana, Juarez, and all the northern cities. Come to the south border where everything is chill and away from that ghetto stuff. basically, everything underneath Mexico City and Guadalajara is excellent.

Come to CUN ;D you'll love it. I loved Cancun so much I stayed here haha. Haven't had a problem here at all (except for the slow internet :[ but the white sand, cyan water, and snorkling make up for it ;D )

I went to Turkey when there was bombs going off not far away - but we were safe.

You can't say the *whole* of Mexico is under attack - find out exactly where you're staying and if the problems it's having is around your area.

I have friends who just got back from Cancun a few days ago and it was perfectly safe. Tourist areas are the safest places in Mexico. Tourists are NOT targets of drug gangs. The violence is in the border areas between drug gangs and other drug gangs and with the police. They have no interest in tourists or the other over one million Americans and Canadians living full-time here in Mexico with me. There is a great deal of misinformation given on this subject. If you read about gang shootings in south central Los Angeles, does that mean you should not take a vacation to Florida, or New York? Same idea here.

rails Americans are nice people, I really like you and in many aspects you are a great country, but there's one thing, you respect the authorities so much you tend to believe everything they say is true, I don't know if that is the case, but on this issue it is not true! please believe me.

I loved Jason's answer, he is totally right!!!

100% safe. I am the whitest of white americans living in Mexico. Don't let the news fool you! Go have fun. Seriously!

There are no drug wars in Cancun--only in the border towns thousands of miles away.
Click the link below to see what Cancun looked like on March 18, 2009. The only shots you'll see are alcoholic.

Yes, it is very dangerous - there is a travel advisory against going to Mexico. Do you watch the news?
