Is it really safe to travel in Mexico?

I'd like to hear from Mexican citizens or people with experience traveling in the country. I really want to go, but my boyfriend insists it's not safe. Where are the safest spots where I won't get kidnapped or mugged!?

OK it's all about common sense... To begin with, ignore anyone who tells you "i know I wouldn't go there!" or "it's extremely dangerous!", cause with those answers I can tell they haven't even gone outside of their own town... Now, Mexico (in general) isn't as safe as the US. But that doesn't mean that you're gonna get mobbed in every corner or that kidnappers will chase you 24/7. As long as you have some common sense, nothing will happen. For example, would you walk around an empty street at 3am in Mexico City just for the heck of it? Of course not... So you're saying you wanna go with your boyfriend right? That means you'd go somewhere more like a beach or a tourist experience... Tourism in Mexico is great, I can only leave it like that. I've been to the caribbean, europe, and different parts of latin america, and the guest service and kindness I've recieved from mexican hotels is no other. So where won't you get kidnapped? Girl, seriously, that sort of thing happening to a tourist is sooooo rare... Only stupid people who think they're still in their hometown and walk around town at 3am in Mexico City with a shirt that says "kidnapp me! lol" would have something happen to them... Just ignore stupid ignorant people and take good advice.

I am mexican and it is very safe for me to live in mexico City, but maybe it is not for a bimbo who always obey her boyfriend ;)

It is safe, but also take care of yourself, for example: (I don't know what part of Mexico do you plan to go), but specially on MEXICO CITY, don't walk on the streets at night, don't let people see money on your hands, avoid lonely streets and ugly neighborhoods, rent a car instead of taking taxis (sometimes they're not safe), if you go to night clubs, preferably don't drink anything or make sure that your waiter opens the bottle or whatever your drinking in front of you, and you'll be ok, believe me, I travel to Mexico like twice a year because I have cousins there, so I KNOW, and you should travel to mexico, it's actually very pretty and have fun!!

I think you need a new boyfriend. Except for border towns and Mexico City you should have very few problems. It is another country with a different cilture(s) ... but that's what makes it interesting. Just use common sense.

it is not safe if you go with the slongan "Im an american",
We usually take that as "you are just a beaner".

I travel there more of 10 times and never happens nothing I drove many miles there and is like in any other place just avoid specific places , don´t stay out very late ,in bars , discos, or in places very populated, people is almost good you can check in some links. dont carry to much cash and use just one credit card at time leave your valuables in the hotel front desk and check that they give you a copy of what valuables you leave in charge. dont stay longer in the borders , right now is some problems in some cities like Laredo,Tijuana and Oaxaca downtown avoid this cities, but almost is safe...enjoy the trip

Don't go to the US border or Acapulco.

Everywhere else is safe, obviously you have to take normal cautions to avoid a robbery or a kidnap.

zocko
resort towns are best. Never camp on a stretch of beach anywhere. Stay on the main highway, period. Crowds are best.

Points whore
I know i wouldn't go there!

ha ha,,,,,,,,,,, you won´t be kidnapped or mugged!......... just go to Los Cabos, Baja California.............Rocky Point, Sonora, and ´u will be treated like a Queen............... good luck .. have fun.....

Sonora & Sinaloa has a very good & safe highways (if you dont fly).. Mazatlan is beautiful, and you will be pleased to spend some nights there (really funny ---- "señor frog and valentino´s").....take advantage of the currency...........good luck .. have fun........................ Kunn.................

The interior is safe, but I advise you not to go to border towns especially Nuevo Laredo. Good Luck:)
