Is it safe for a white American male to study/live in Tec de Monterrey?

I'm glad you chose Tec de Monte I actually studied there :D

There is nothing to worry about. It's a perfectly safe school.
Avoid the northern campuses like the ones in Tijuana, Reynosa, and Juarez. Go to the southern cities. it's safe and miles away from the bad parts.

You'll love being a white American in this school :D Talk English to a Mexican girl and they start to melt haha. no but you shouldn't have any problems. ;D

Making friends is easy there. People there have a tendency to be very friendly. It should be easy to adapt.

Maybe the only thing you'll have a problem with is food. Try to not eat so much in the street as Mexican food is very prepared and to a stomach that's always eaten processed foods it might be a little hard. Try making your own food for the first month or so. Buy groceries from stores like Wal-Mart, Chedraui, Bodega Aurrera, or Comercial Mexicana. This is just meanwhile your stomach adapts to natural foods.

Also you'll find out that the classes aren't so hard ;D and things are cheap. You'll learn a lot but they won't overwhelm you with too much homework. STUDY for tests though, that's something that crapped me up in my first Cuatrimester :[.

It's perfectly safe and you should really consider going for it. You'll talk fluently in Spanish meet a lot of rich people, and you'll go back to America with brand new experiences and you'll see the way you look at life differently.

The drug gangs don't target Americans of any complexion. The have no reason for doing so. They target rival gangs and the police.

The narco traffic wars are north of Monterrey along the border. To the west, they extend further south. But that is several hours west of Monterrey.

You might want to use this analogy.
Would it have been safe to study in Madison, Wisconsin in the 20s, while liquor gang wars were going on in Chicago?

It's about the same distance between Madison and Chjcago as about the same as between Monterrey and Nuevo Larredo or Reynosa.

Nothing to worry about. Monterrey is safe and many Americans live all over Mexico, and the Tec de Monterrey is known to be the best school in Mexico, and they have a lot of security.

Tell them like I told my family. "Have you all ever BEEN to Mexico? Have you ever spend any length of time in Monterrey?" If not than I suggest not speaking out of ignorance. Just look at the numbers. There are just over 1 million US Citizens living in Mexico according to government sources. That's just the ones with the proper documents. There are at least double that living there without documents. (Yes, you won't hear THAT on the alphabet channels! US citizens living undocumented in Mexico...) Compare that to how many you hear or read about in the news being kidnapped or otherwise harmed. Conclusion: Living in Monterrey is no less safe than living in any comparable US city.
