The buses in Mexico are excellent.

However, you are looking at a very long ride and flying often turns out to be about the same cost or in some cases, slightly cheaper than busing.

My daughter and I recently traveled to Mexico by bus. I agree Grey hound bus line sucks. But the bus lines in Mexico are GREAT. They are new , roomy, have bathrooms that actually flush and have running water, there are TVs and most drivers speak some English. One driver thought because I am white I couldn't understand spanish so he put on a English speaking movie for me. Just be careful as you would in any new place. Don't carry a purse. Keep your money in a pocket or bra. Don't leave the bus station. But your husband needs to meet you at the term-ail so you don't have to find a bus on your own.

There is no greyhound in Mexico.

Once you get over the border be sure and ride on ETN This bus line puts all american and mexican airliners to shame.

Mexico does not care about your passport. it is when you try to get back to the USA that you will be required to have a passport or passport card. I travel across all the time by land air and water.

People who say you need a passport for LAND travel to Mexico are WRONG...passports for land travel are not needed until June 2009...however if you go to Mexico now and stay that long, you will need one to return any time after next June. Only takes 3 weeks to get a passport. You have to take Greyhound to the US. border, then will take a Mexican bus line. ALL Mexican bus lines are musch nicer and much safer than buses in the U.S. Even the local one to the small town. Also, why can't your husband take the bus to Guadalajara and meet you there, then ride with you back to the small town? If you can make the trip all the way by yourself, he should certainly take to trouble to come meet you in Guadalajara. You will be FINE. I am a single American woman and have traveled through Mexico by bus and know plenty of others who have too...you will be just fine. But...do INSIST that he come meet you at the big bus station in Guadalajara ...that is only resonable.

You are right that you don't need a passport yet for ground travel to Mexico. (I think you meant changes coming in 2009). You need proof of citizenship and a photo ID now.
I have travelled by Greyhound from Mexico City going South, as well as on many local buses in different areas of Mexico by myself and I was never in a situation where I felt afraid. I was very careful to make sure I had my purse inside my jacket so it was concealed. Also, I was always aware of what was going on around me. The biggest challenge on a lengthy trip, is you might want to take a nap, and of course then you will be susceptible to trouble. I don't think I would want to be on a bus alone in Guadalajara - maybe your husband can meet you there and you can travel to the small town together.
(As Marc pointed out - no it was not specifically Greyhound - but the Mexican bus lines - anything that looks like a bus, we just call greyhound - and by the way, the Mexican bus lines for longer trips were surprisingly roomy and clean and quiet).

You are not making any sense. Of course you need a passport. It has been required since January 1, 2008. It doesn't matter if you cross go by plane or bus. You need you passport on both occasions.

I don't know about the Mexico part, but I traveled from Canada to Alabama by Greyhound. I did it because I could take 7 items of luggage with me, and it was the cheapest way to move.

My experience was that the farther south I got, the dodgier the greyhound stations got. In your area of the country, they were all clean and efficient and things were running on time. The buses had students heading home for the weekend, and grandmas on their way to see their grandkids and whatnot. But once I got to Nashville and beyond, the stations were dirty, the greyhound employees rude, and there were a lot more unwashed weirdos taking the bus. One of my buses was cancelled for no apparent reason and I had to take a later one, and the staff acted like I was a pain in the butt for even asking about it.

After all that, I'm glad I took the trip. It was an adventure. It's neat to watch the scenery change. And when I got there, I really felt like I'd made the journey.

Your milage will, obviously, vary.

I wouldn't take Greyhound if my life depended on did you know
that passengers are getting killed by other passengers on greyhound?
plus Greyhound doesnt go into Mexico either (its another company that
they contract out too
thats their one of the problems
some times the bus runs late and your connection bus WILL Not
wait for the late bus which leave you stranded
then the bus could be very crowded and you would have to stand on a bus
for 2 or more hours
or the bus driver could get lost, (its happened!) or the bus driver
doesnt speak English!
or the restroom overflows with human feces down the aisle!
thats a pretty smelll! or the bus catches fire or breaks down

why not fly instead?

The girl that said she road Greyhound in Mexico must have done it in her dreams, the only Greyhounds in Mexico are like little dogs called Chihuahuas, like the one on Taco Bell commercial! If you were a huge million dollar bus company operating in a wealthy country for many years why would you want to go into a poor country to render your services?Believe me Greyhound doesn't run to Mexico, maybe to the boarder! And you do need a passport, and if you get lost in Mexico you my never see your beloved husband again!Take a plane it'll be safer and you'll live longer.Adios amigos!
