The troubles that are going on in Mexico are happening in the north at the border and in the border towns. Cancun is 2000 miles away from this. The US news media is blowing the whole situation out of proportion. Cancun is incredibly safe for tourists of any type.
Because Cancun relies on the tourist trade, there are lots of police (local and national as well as the military police) who are watching out for foreigners to ensure that no trouble happens. The troubles aren't in Cancun anyways, they're in the north, which as I said is 2000 miles away. Probably NYC or LA or Chicago or any major city is less safe than Cancun is at the moment.
In general, my advice would be that you exercise caution and use common sense. Don't get absolutely drunk when you're not at your resort (I'm sure we all have stories of stuff we'd chosen not to do when drunk and when we haven't exercised common sense), don't go looking for drugs or other illegal substances or activities. Ask your hotel about the areas you should avoid and don't go there. They'll have lots of recommendations for safe areas to go to.
But also don't be afraid, I live in one of the more unsafe areas of Mexico (in a Northern Mexico border state, where the US governement has said not to go) and I have never had any problems traveling anywhere in Mexico. I always feel very safe.
Go, have fun, enjoy yourselves, just be safe. Don't make poor decisions (like getting absolutely drunk to the point where you can't remember anything in the morning), don't go looking for trouble (and it won't come looking for you). Use your common sense and have fun.
And for the poster who said it's never safe for a 19 year old woman to travel alone, I say that's stupid. I'm a single woman who has done traveling all over Europe and Mexico alone for many years and I've never had any problems no matter where I've gone. I just exercise common sense and don't go somewhere or do something if my instinct tells me not to. |

Remember to stay in the tourist locations. Everyone speaks English there, so you'll be fine. Be wary of the clubs though. If you get drunk, you put yourself in a lot of danger. The beaches are fine. When you go buy something, don't be afraid to offer a lower price. They see Americans and they'll try to rip you off!!
Don't forget to visit Xcaret!! It's gorgeous! |

Click the first link below to see what Cancun looked like on March 16, 2009. I don't hear any shooting, do you? The shooting is all at the border and Cancun is very safe. Do you notice that the people who say it's not safe don't provide any links showing danger in Cancun?
The main reason the government and the media are hyping the drug problems at the border is that they want to scare people to stay in the USA and spend their money at California, Florida and Gulf Coast beaches. |

Definitely, yes.
I am 19 & went to Cancun with 2 family members (great aunt and uncle). I wondered off with random friends I had met, roughly the same age, and everything was fine with us! I never ever felt in danger once. Just use common sense - stay in touristy places and don't flash around you're money/cameras - remember its a poor country. I never heard of any problems there though & I'd even consider going back alone (a white 19 year old female!).
Enjoy Cancun, I wish I was going back. |

Depends on what safe is! Are your parents worried about the violence that they hear about in the news? Then yes, Cancun is safe.
Are your parents worried about two young girls getting drunk and making bad decisions in a foreign country? Then, nothing will convince them that it is safe! |

NO! absolutely not. It's never safe for women of that age to travel abroad without any safety precautions.
Best thing to do is go with more people and bring male companions that you can trust. |
