Is it safe to have ice cubes in Mexico at a bar?

Is there a way to get purified ice?

It depends on where you are located. If it is safe where you are to drink the water chances are the ice cubes came from there. If you are in an area where the water is not safe, I wouldn't place them in any of your drinks or accept drinks with them. If you aren't used to the water it can make you really sick, like hospitalized. Chances are they don't have purified Ice, and just to be safe I wouldn't buy ice unless it has an American flag or symbol on the bag or indication it wasn't produced there. Ice is just frozen water- the bacteria and other things that can make you sick are still there. If you boiled the water and then froze it, that might work.

I have been to Mexico 5 times and have always had ice in the drinks. We do however only drink bottled water.. and have never had any problem...

So drink up and have fun!!!!

I lived there for 10 years, so I wound up with plenty of ice cubes without being sick, but I would not recommend it. When you're there for years, you build up what for lack of a better word I'll call immunities.

Ice cubes are made of water and the water is generally unsafe. Unless you're positive it's ice made from bottled water, why risk it?

I have to respectfully disagree with Louis. I love Mexico, Mexicans, the culture, the food, the architecture, the geographical variety, on and on. But to say you should not visit a wonderful place unless you drink the water (or eat street food, if you're a tourist), is just plain foolish.

I see you got several answers from ignorant people who have probably never been to Mexico...but never miss an opportunity to slam it. I am an American living in Mexico and find it to be perfectly safe. In all the tourist areas and resorts, the establishments use purified water to serve the guests Ice is a convenience made available specifically for tourists, as Mexicans seldom use ice in any of their drinks.

meeeeeeeee
no. dont use ice. mexican water has different bacteria in it that americans' bodies are not used to, that's why many people get sick, this includes ice cubes.

lpaganus
This is not your Grandpa's Mexico...most restaurants have Cristapuro purified water (look for the big tank) and make their own icecubes with a machine. Ice by the bag is available at stores and liquor stores, also produced by Cristapuro. It wont have an American flag on it. Bottled water widely available distributed by Nestle, one of Mexico's biggest companies. If you are really fussy, drink your Tequila neat with a bottle of water on the side.

Not unless you want to risk getting the squirts.

Maybe in the bar at the hotel... but then, I woulnd't risk it. Stick with your own water....

No and no. In fact, that is a mistake a lot of people make; they avoid the water but get ice in their drinks. Drink only bottled water (and make certain that the cap is still on-don't let the waiter take it off). Do not get ice in your drinks.

This is nothing negative about Mexico-it's a great country. Not always safe, but very interesting and beautiful. But their tap water is not purified to the extent that US tap water is. And the locals' bodies are used to it, but Americans are not. So you will get sick if you drink it, as you haven't developed any immunity to "normal" bacteria in Mexican tap water.

if you think that way then dont go to mexico, i hate people that say ohh is it safe to drink water in mexico ohh is mexico dangerous ..anywhere is dangerous and not safe for stuff even in the u.s ..so my answer is who knows..just like i say who knows if an ice cube is safe in a U.S bar.. just drink up have fun

It doesn't matter, you'll be robbed and beat up when you leave anyway, so if you get sick too, eh, it's no big deal.
