Where in Sinaloa?
I did something similar - I moved to Mazatlan with my boyfriend when I didn't speak Spanish (though I'm not blonde). It was a fantastic experience. I learned Spanish, I definitely grew from the experience, and I learned a lot about Mexico.
Are you planning on going to a small town or some place like Mazatlan? If you're going to be on the coast, chances are you'll find lots of other Americans living there. (I had a blast hanging out with other young, expat Americans who were adventurous and fun - many of them young, blonde women.) But if you're moving to a small town up in the hills, it might be a different story. The towns are more isolated. Will you be able to work (even if under the table?) because you're bound to get bored if you don't. Even in a place like Mazatlan, I was so bored until I found a couple of jobs - including one teaching English, which was awesome. (If you're going to consider doing so, try to get TOEFL certifed - you can do so online. It will help you find work.)
Even so, it would be a great experience. Even if you get there and find out that you don't like it, you'll learn a lot!
Having lived and traveled all over Mexico, I'd say the scare-talk is WAY overhyped. Of course, you need to be smart. But it's not any worse than living in the States.
Why not decide to try it for three months? Go down. Check it out. You'll never know if you don't try.
As for me, I'm no longer with that boyfriend, but I am still with a Mexican man. I'm currently living in the States, but I'm making plans to move back down to Mexico.
Oh ... and don't think all Mexicans are dark-haired. Especially in Sinaloa. The state was largely built by the French and Germans (the latter of whom brought in beer, as in Pacifico, which is from Mazatlan), so there are lots of fairskinned blondes in Sinaloa. Especially up in the hills, you'll find whole towns of fairskinned folks who are the descendents of these Europeans. Ask your boyfriend! He should know.
I'd say go for it. Give it a try. |

Something in your subconscious is telling you not to go. We (the answerers) are not aware of what that is. Only you know, and your subconscious is screaming for you to stay.
Most people would consider this a great opportunity to experience a new culture, learn a new language and do something fun and different.
You already know your answer.
p.s. Mexico is extremely safe. I feel more safe here as a blonde young canadian than I do in the USA. |

Follow your heart. The drug king pins aren't looking for you. Sinaloa is a great state and Mazatlan is a fabulous beach resort with all kinds of expats to hang with. Good surfing too. Learn Spanish. |

you need to listen to your mind. sinaloa is one of the most, if not the most dangerous state in mexico. there is heavy, heavy drug trade, and a LOT of violence. although it's true that you can avoid violence by not becoming involved in the drug business....it's very difficult to avoid becoming involved in sinaloa, and innocent bystanders are often victims.
with blonde hair, you're going to stick out. and i imagine it maybe difficult for you to make the adjustment from the US to mexico. sinaloa has a LOT of money...a lot of wealthy people. but they got that money by doing illegal things. you're going to have a hard time fitting in if you can't compete....and there are not many legal ways to do it.
i don't suggest moving anywhere with a guy who is not your husband. and i would take the fact that he's moving as a kind of HINT to yourself that he may not be that serious about you. any man in love, and wanting to get married, would ask you at this point.
bottom line...i wouldn't move there, and i would use this time away from your guy to really think about the relationship. |

That depends on where the family lives. There are towns that are basically run by drug kingpins.
Re:your BF hitting you.
Has he exhibited the signs of a person that would do such a thing? if not then no worries.
Friends of mine moved to Monterrey Nuevo Leon with no problems....my sister and her husband live there with no problems.
Learn Spanish.....it will make a difference. |

girl, I'm mexican and just recently noticed a lot of american young woman have been arriving to mexico to create a family and have children, why don't you do a research on google I bet you'll find a lot of expats living in mexico, working and running business. I know some american inmigrants young and old americans, but unfortunately I can't provide you with their emails adresses, sorry its a matter of privacy you know it...
but seriously I recommend you do a research on google, or at least to be in contact with the expat community living in mexico, there are millions.
good luck!

I used to be in your position and really questioned whether it was a good idea to move down too...(I used to live there). My then fiance was from a different culture and the whole idea appealed to me then...however, as time went by, a lot of things started to surface that taught me that this wasn't the best situation for me. He was too controlling and it really wasn't very safe. The wandering eyes and behind the scenes affairs made me feel more unsettled considering how accepted it was where I lived. I also had to take many precautions there that limited my freedom. ( I was sexually harrassed everywhere I went and the blondes definitely get a lot of attention.)
In the end, I married someone else from my own country and now feel entirely happy. It would have been very bad if I went through the other wedding.
Think about why you feel insecure about going and really think this through. Only you know if this is what you really want.. Also think about raising kids and visiting your family (if this is in the picture) and what could happen if you split. Would you stay there? Would you have problems leaving the country? Like I said, it is really necessary to think it all out.
I was asked by one boyfriend to go to Bogata Columbia to stay with his family. His grandmother lived in Medina and he wanted me to visit her. Within two months from the time I declined, guerrilla attacks and blockages occurred on the very road we would have needed to travel down. I too had a gut feeling not to go...despite the learning opportunity that seemed so interesting. Sometimes those gut instincts are there for a reason, I think.
Listen to your heart dear....and good luck!! |
