Is it safe to send packages from the u.s. to mexico?

Is it safe to send packages from the U.S. to Mexico City? Some people have told me that the contents may or may not get there. Are there any specific companies to use? Please only answer this if you have personal experience sending things to Mexico.

Thanks!

No. It is also not safe to travel outside of normal "tourist cities".

The U.S. government has travel warnings about the dangers of traveling to Mexico. There is a lot of robbing and killing.

However, it is safe to travel to Canada.

What U.S. government says about travelling to Mexico.
"Visitors should be aware of their surroundings at all times, even when in areas generally considered safe. Women traveling alone are especially vulnerable and should exercise caution, particularly at night. Victims, who are almost always unaccompanied, have been raped, robbed of personal property, or abducted and then held while their credit cards were used at various businesses and Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs). Armed street crime is a serious problem in all of the major cities. Some bars and nightclubs, especially in resort cities such as Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Acapulco, can be havens for drug dealers and petty criminals. Some establishments may contaminate or drug drinks to gain control over the patron. "

Also:
"All bus travel should be during daylight hours and on first-class conveyances. "

I just recently returned from a five year residence in Mexico. Yes, you can send packages to Mexico, but it is best to send them via UPS, DHL or Fed Ex. I always received packages when they were sent to me by these carriers.
In response to the first post, I traveled throughout the country and never once was I robbed or harrassed in any way. I did get robbed in Florida, once, though.

Hi,
Yes I ship all the time to Mexico. As the person below suggested, UPS and DHL will work just fine. Customs may open the package but you should be OK. I do suggest you include a letter to make it look like a gift. Wrap it well as the distribution can be rough..

The first answer you got (bush something) is nonsense. I lived in Mexico for 10 years, had zero problems, loved it, was treated graciously by the Mexicans, and we intend to retire in Mexico.

If you're sending a package, I seriously recommend NOT using the post office. I had very few packages sent to me when I was there, but those via the post office never arrived. However, there is service from all the major shippers, like UPS, DHL, Fed Ex, and so far as I know, it's reliable.

Good luck, buena suerte.

Of course the first poster is a Bush family member...he shares his brains and, apparently, his inacurate intelligence. I lived in Mexico ten years and was not robbed or killed.

For the package, use DHL, Fedex, or UPS. The quality and speed of service tends to vary by city, but I have used all these with success. All of these services should arrive, but some are more likely to be faster in cities where their network is stronger. Mexico City has all three.

Important things and valuables should go by DHL or other private carrier. We do receive books by regular mail from Powells in Portland as well as things like Xmas cards

As most of the posters have already said, you CAN send packages, but do NOT use the regular mail service. I have received packages through the major couriers, such as DHL. An extra precaution that we take is for the sender to make a list of what they have placed in the package and then to have them email that list to me at my home address. I would say that about eight out of ten times, the packages ARE opened by Mexican customs. So far, out of 20 or so packages opened by them, NOT ONE THING has been taken. I have used DHL, UPS, and FedEx and found their services equal.
