The uproar in Oaxaca has calmed down since last fall, and Mexico in general is a very safe place to travel. We went to Oaxaca and Mexico City recently and had a great time. Just use the same precautions you would use anywhere (don't walk down dark roads by yourself at nite,etc...).
Fodor's message board is a great resource for travel questions, here is a link to the Latin America thred: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=6 |

Right now it's all clear. There were disturbances about a year back but its been put down. In San Cristobal everything looks good but always beware of the drug cartel war happening right now. |

hi!! i was just in oaxaca 2 weeks ago, a national group of travel agents met there, we met the gobernor and the city president and everything is perfectly fine, it is a beautiful city, people are being extra nice because of the problem they had.. it is very safe to be walking around downtown late at night, you should definetely go there. it is so amazing!! |

in Oaxaca it has last been calm, although the union of teachers and social organizations glides to boycott the Guelaguetza which caused the suspension of some festejos, but this began as of the next month, if you want to travel you must do it soon, since also votings for deputies in August approach, which caused political manifestations in the capital, in any case the conflict is between oaxaqueños, the tourists happen unnoticed unless they participate in protests, greetings.

The Oaxaca problem is getting better, Mexico is safer than before, I have't got any problem in my whole life (and I'm mexican) I'm in Germany now and I almost got robbed in Cologne even though Germany is supposed to be safer. It's just the place where you are in Mexico, Mexico City isa bit dangerous in some places because there's a lot of population. I live in Guadalajara, though, and I think it's one of the best places to live. I love it. Besides we all like foreign people. |

Yes, I have frive in Oaxaca for a while in my car with Texas license plates. We never had any trouble around. Im Mexican, my first language is spanish, but it is safe.
I actually live in the mexican border, my neighbors are powerful "you know what" and is still safe.
People is scared to come to Mexico, I have no idea why. The murdered people are members from drug gangs. Murdered civilians is about .00001 percent. |

If you believe in statistics, a tourist is safer traveling in Mexico than traveling in Washington, D.C.; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California and Miami, Florida.
I think the US Government should give travel advisories to travelers thinking about visiting American Cities, where crime and the threat of terrorism (Orange alert, I believe...) should keep prospective visitors away. |

yes it is. Also all tourist have the protection from the government, there's no weird activity in those places and the culture there its wonderful... San Cristobal is beautiful.. don't be afraid |

not really Mexico is dangerous right now not like before and the anti american sentiment is high seems like the popular thing in other countries to hate americans , anyway, no mexico isnt safe the kidnappings are up, the drug wars are raging and the government is basically at war with the drug lords best wait a couple of years |
|

Just a friend.

It's not really safe overall, however there are areas where you would be OK. The drug cartels and Mexican army are in open warfare. This use to only be in the boarder regions, however it has spilled out all over the country. Many places that were perfectly safe no longer are. Tourists are still pretty safe unless you are in Mexico City or the boarder towns, however with so much violence all over the country you just never know.
Of course you are still in danger the most from the local police, that hasn't changed at all. |
