Is it safe to walk from the Sheraton Centro Historico (1 Mile) to Plaza de la Constitucion in Mexico City?

It should be a nice walk. Just don't have $100 bills hanging out of your pockets to tempt thieves. That is also an area that would be ok after dark, but don't stay out alone anyplace very late.

Not sure why you are going if you are that concerned. Try to withhold your concern on the streets or you'll you'll be a magnet ... and look both ways before crossing the streets

I've done it, and I'm still alive. Just be carefull and if you are bringing a camera try to carry it in something diferent than a camera case. Good luck and have a nice trip!!!.

Try no to look so visitor-type for not to call persons' attention. And walk during the day, never at night If you can bring someone with you, it can be much better. Very nice place to visit. Good advive would be to walk on a weekend day. Good luck with your trip and I hope to hear a good story from your visit to Mexico.

OK using the logic:

If the Sheraton is in front of Bellas Artes (Mexican Opera House), Alameda Park, and the street that connected these places with Plaza de la ConstituciÃ³n are the touristic zone of Mexico's historical center.

WHY IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK IS DANGEROUS??????

Don't be stupid, that is one of the most well safe streets in Mexico City.

Hundred of tourists from all over the world walk by there everyday.

If you will visit my country with those kind of "paranoia" to my country, perhaps you should not go outside your's

Wow, so much passion in the answers! Be sensible, don't look like a tourist. The markets are fun, but have potential for being robbed (pickpocketed mostly). Wallet in front pocket. No jewelry. No gawking like a tourist. La Lagunilla is fun, but stay away from Tepito. The taxi advice is good. Cars don't stop for pedestrians (follow the crowd). Streets are safe until very late night/early morning when there are no others around. Mind your Ps and Qs and you'll be fine. I live very close to Mex City and go there often. Never mind the guy who got offended about the question. Your question is legitimate, and most Mexicans take this info for granted.

I guess you can be safe, try not to take jewerly or things to show up. Try to stay calm and look secure. If you can walk with some workmate or friend.

Why not just take a cab. You can't go walking around these towns looking like a tourist, you have to blend in.If you walk, do it when many people are out and about. Don't carry your life in your pockets. Be aware of your surroundings at all time.

(warning, this is a long answer, but I feel it is useful information for you)

It's ok, follow all of the other advices, they are extremely good!

I really think that once you are there you will feel safer than you expect, but if you really want to get all the precautions possible, I can give you some advice, 'cause I lived there, and actually pretty close to that area for a while. I've been safe most of the time, and believe me, better safe than sorry, so if you feel nervous about it, get all the information possible:

If it is possible, please walk with a group. If not, just mind your own business, ignore people who don't seem right and try not to trust anyone with very good intentions... like offering you a free meal. Let me tell you, there's nothing for free in Mexico City. There is a lot of beautiful people with the greatest intentions, but you never know... specially if it is only for a walk, better keep it safe.

If you take a cab, PLEASE don't take one of those green ones going around the city. Nor take the yellow ones. THIS IS IMPORTANT. They seem to be less expensive, but many of the bad stories you heard? free cabs are the source.
There is a very very reliable cab service. I used it myself to go any distance, alone, and even with my kid. They once even returned my purse that I had forgotten in one of the cabs. Really, top service in my opinion. It is more expensive (nothing like a California cab) because they will charge you more for every trip, but there is the chance of hiring them by the hour, starting at two hours. They will charge like around 20 dollars/hour. The money is worth it.

The name and phone: Servitaxi 5516-6020 or 5516-6025,( if dialing from the city). Reliable and friendly service. I really recommend it. They can also give you more updated tips on safety, given that you can communicate with a bit of Spanish... some of them speak English, but not all of them.

I want to warn you about traffic. It is different there. There are not crosswalks, and cars won't easily stop even if they see you crossing by. The rule is to cross at the corners, and while the lights are on red, ONLY. Please be careful.

I also recommend you to visit a place called Coyoacan. It was my favorite place. On weekends there is a market open, with some beautiful crafts, and there's street performances, and a lot of food!. And it is not a dangerous place either.

Try to have the number of the hotel on you, in case something would happen, you can get assistance. Try to speak to an executive at the hotel. I am sure at the Sheraton the service must be impecable, and they can give you any other information you might need on how to feel safe.

not so safe, but this is so dangerous, dont ever go to a mercado or market called tepito, my mom went there once and skhe said that somebody stole her purse, and that mercado is one of the most dangerous places in all the world.
