Another cliche.
OK, here is the thing:
Of course Mexicans know that a lot of the southern territory of the USA (not just California) was part of Mexico and was taken (supposedly bought, but at a really low price) by the USA.
Its called the Mexican-American war.
This part of history is NOT that well known nor studied in the USA for obvious reasons.
David Pletcher, a historian says that: "it was an aggressive war in which we attacked our neighbor, and independently of all that we gained with this war, we don't like to see the way we gained it.
I hope you can read a little Spanish, because if you check this part of history in Wikipedia, you can see the differences between the Spanish and the English versions, so you can see how both countries see this moment in history.
Spanish version:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerra_M%C3%A9xico-Estados_Unidos
English version:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican-American_War
Don't worry, Mexicans know that it was an unjust war and the Tratado de Guadalupe, in which Mexico lost more than half of its territory ( 2 million and 500 kilometers) was not fair, but we are not trying to take it back. |

Time to stop this useless aggravation, stirring up trouble. College kids have fun arguing about the issue of Atzlan..its so over, folks. The border lines are drawn and no one wants to start a war to take back the western states. Get serious, we have enough wars going on that we have to support.. |

Great answer Patito.
We are not planning an invation haha; however, it was a really unjust war, and if Santa Anna hadn't sold "La Mesilla" you would had also taken Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Baja California Peninsula. I say this because La Mesilla was sold as a negotiation.
The USA stole the Northern Territories of Mexico, but we know we'll never have the back. Anyway, we'll never forget and that's why Mex and USA will be always enemies |

since mexico did not recognize texas as independent, they felt it had no business being annexed as a us state. so in order to end the diplomatic disagreement, the US used its only form of foreign diplomacy and invaded mexico.
new mexico, arizona, nevada, utah, and california were given to the US in a "legal and diplomatic treaty", while US marines were occupying mexico city. several years later i believe the US paid mexico for the land, something like 15 million dollars, which is worth a few hundred million today, but no where near the billions that california alone produces. but i think the biggest complaint was that part of the treaty was that the US was to recognize previous land ownership by mexicans, but after the treaty was signed, they erased all claims to land ownership by mexicans and let white americans buy the land.
so some still somewhere in their ancestry still technically own the land....but would it be worth as much if it was still mexico? lol oregon would have a huge immigration problem haha. |
