you know, In Germany the stories about going to California and Florida say that all Germans get killed. its true that that has happend. you can get killed anywhere.

those stories are made up to control where you go and spend your money.

do it if you want...im sure you ll be ok.

People from all over the world get killed in Mexico City. It can be a violent, dangerous and even lawless place, if you aren´t careful. But it can also be culturally colorful, historic, friendly and impacting. If you have the opportunity to visit don´t pass it up...but again just be careful.

No.

That is a myth created by racists.

As in any other part in the world it all depends on you, where you go, how you behave, etc. Always ask at the hotel about the areas you intend to visit and use hotel recommended taxis. They will always lookout for you!

Unfortunately, big cities have dangerous places and Mexico is not the exception. What happens is that many times tourists (from anywhere) do not know that it´s not safe to be in a certain place at certain time of the day. It happens all around the world. As tourists we have to be cautious, try not to walk alone, avoid dark and empty streets, take care of our bags, purse or wallet... It doesn´t matter if we are in the "safest" city of the world.... Many times travel agencies do not tell us where not to go because there is money of by means.... What I recommend is to contact someone who lives there or has been there before.

Mexico City used to have an extremely high crime rate. The government has put many things such as armed officers on all major streets in to place. It is much safer today then it was 5 years ago. Nonetheless, you want to stay away from desolate places and make sure to get a cab from a good hotel, there have been issues with cabbies robbing passengers, the hotels get reputable cab companies to escort their guests.

there are 23 million living in a metropolitan area as large as Los Angeles and San Diego together ( Miami and Ft Lauderdale or NYC and NJ districts or any other comparatio for make it in a 100 square miles area), so there's some danger zones, so we have many elite areas where all tourists are sorrounded by polices just for their tranquility.

Anyway there hundred of thousands tourists from all over the world like any other big city. The proportion of danger is mininum for the size of the city...

Have a nice trip

Tourists get killed everywhere in the world, no more no less than in Mexico City. Big cities, overpopulated, are rich breeding grounds for criminal behavior. My countrymen,Americans I'm sorry to say often behave in ways that practically shout an invitation to robbers. Flash clothes, flash cars. Murder is a serious crime in Mexico and is bad for the tourism industry, all crimes are investigated by law enforcement and the criminals are prosecuted. Someone mentioned Germans as targets for crime...in Santa Monica California, years ago, a German tourist was killed. Trips and hotel reservations were cancelled, big play in the international press, the Tourist Department is still getting calls about violence. DF is big, busy and a wonderful historic place to visit.

NO IT IS NOT THE TRUE...If that was anyway near close, tourism market in Mexico would be over.

Mexico City is a beautiful place that has all the mayor problems that any big city in the world experiences like Madrid, New York, Tokio or Milan. I invite you to come and enjoy the famous Mexican hospitality, you will be blown away and will have a great time.

Tourists all over the world usually do things in other countries that wouldn´t dare to do in their own hometowns, so the rule is very simple everywhere you go: do not put yourself in dangerous situations thinking is something "fun" or "adventurous" like taking the subway or going to neighborhoods with bad reputation or take a "night walk" downtown...is a no-no all the time.

Other than that...Welcome to Mexico City baby!!!

It's just like any other large city. I doubt they specifically target Americans but like in any city there is crime.

I'm a white Canadian living here for 4 years and for 2 of those years I lived in Iztapalapa one of the most dangerous areas, I have only been attacked once by a 4 year old wielding a piñata stick, and to her favour she was masked.
There are more problems travelling through city's in the United States and more types and races of people willing to hurt or harm you.
Mexicans are in most not racist (in Mexico) and since Mexico is 99% Mexican you will have no trouble.
Hide the bling bling and Rolex, since Mexico is a poor place this will increase your risk of being robbed, the people here are more desperate due to the economy and you will be robbed 100% if you flash the goods (best to leave valuables at home).
And remember the #1 rule in Mexico, if you think it's a bad idea it is.
I have never been so well treated by any type of people including my fellow Canadians as I have been treated by Mexicans.

I think Mexico City is much more safer than Washington DC.

Where did some of you people get your information from? Mexico City is STILL a very dangerous city. All kinds of people get killed in Mexico D.F. There are different factors of why this is such a dangerous place. Poverty (need), Corruption (govt), Pollution (health), Overpopulation, etc.. I am from Mexico and have been to Mexico D.F. once and don't know if I will ever go back.

No. First they get robbed, then tortured, then murdered. What a dumb question!! By the way, those illegal immigrants from Mexico are just tourists that have misplaced their passports.

NO. Sometimes some people come up to you to give them some money. If you don't then they might hurt you.

Mexico City has millions of poor people (I'm sure there are many middle-class and rich also), but the fact is that Americans often aren't prepared for what they run into in the poorer regions of the world. We often think that things will be similar to home...but would you happily walk down streets in poorer areas even here in the United States and feel safe? Probably not. So, since Mexico City has so many poor people, and us people from the United States stick out like a sore thumb there, it makes us easy targets. Especially since much of the police there are also corrupt, and also because we (mostly) don't speak the language. It puts us at a huge disadvantage.

I don't know about Mexico City, but there have been plenty of horror stories about remote parts of the country for years. You'll never see me in Mexico.
