Do not drink tap water and watch out for the ice in some of the local restaurants.
If there is a hole in the ice it is safe if not it may be just as bad as the tap water. |

I am in Mexico and I am drinking water at the moment. The water purification plant in the city is very good, the water leaves there under international standards. Then it goes through the pipes, some new some ancient and most in between. There are many leaks, the water gets stored in different places with different sanitation. I use the tap water for washing, bathing and watering the garden. We buy bottled water for drinking, coffee, tea, etc.
When you come to Mexico, keep your mouth closed in the shower. |

Nobody in Mexico drinks tap water. Many pipes are old and leaky and cities do not have adequate water purification systems. Everyone, including restaurants, uses bottled water. Hotels put bottled water in your room for you to use to brush your teeth. Ice is made from bottled water. |

Some of the bigger cities (Puerto Vallarta, parts of Mexico City, etc.) have fully-purified water that is drinkable; however, they don't use as much chlorine and other chemicals as we use in the US -- so, drinking it may still cause you a short-term problem. In most other areas, the water is filtered, but not sanitized, which makes it okay for cooking, but not drinking. The reason is that filtering alone does not remove the random bacteria and chemicals that may be present in groundwater. The bacteria, which may not really be very harmful, can cause major stomach upsets until your body gets used to it. If worse bacteria is present (e.coli, etc.), you can get pretty sick.
Fortunately, bottled water is readily available and very cheap -- a 20L bottle of Ciel or Santorini costs about 21 pesos ($1.50US). |

If you are deep in the jungle, boil your water and use purification tablets. Otherwise, drink bottled water like everyone else in Mexico. |

Stick to bottled water and you will be fine. They do not clean their water as we do here, so there are often organisms in the water that can cause some people to get sick to their stomach. |

stick with beer & tequila, you'll be fine. |

There are good purifying systems in big cities on Mexico, the problem comes with the pipes that carry the water to your location and how the storage of the liquid is done in houses and other buildings.
Most of the big name hotels have even a purifying system of their own for the water is consumed at the hotel.
But my suggestion is that you take bottled water at all times. |

Not unless you'd like to spend a considerable amount of your trip on the toilet! This is often referred to as Montezuma's Revenge, or traveler's diarrhea, and is usually caused by bacterial pathogens (E. Coli most commonly).
Some people get a prescription for an antibiotic from their physician to prevent this, but it is necessary to begin taking the drug prior to your departure for Mexico and is generally not recommended. Here are a few tips on how to avoid getting this:
-Maintain good hygiene and only use safe water for drinking and teeth brushing.
-Use only safe bottled water and avoid ice. Reports of locals filling bottles with tap water, then sealing them and then selling the bottled water as purified water have come out of several countries.
-Drink safe beverages — these include bottled carbonated beverages, hot tea or coffee and water boiled or appropriately treated by the traveler.
-Active intervention involves boiling water for three to five minutes (depending on elevation), filtering water with appropriate filters or using chlorine bleach (2 drops per litre) or tincture of iodine (5 drops per litre) in the water. The wide availability of safe bottled water makes these interventions usually unnecessary for all but the most remote destinations.
-Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables unless the traveler peels them.
Good luck and enjoy your trip! |

Obiously you dont drink tap water here in the USA so why drink tap water any where else. Just buy the 5 gallon bottle water. If you dont want to buy the 5 gallon bottle water boil your tap water for a couple of minutes. |

Except for peurto vallarta, the water in mexico is not purified the same as it is in the US, so it causes a lot of visiting people to get the runs. |

You can, but you will have bad diarrhea because the water isn't very clean and our immune system isn't use to their water. |
