I am an American living in Mexico. Most medicatons, like blood pressure medicine, antibiotics, and arthritis medicines can be purchased without a prescription. However, medicines that are "controlled substances" in the United States are also controlled substances here. Narcotics, ADD meds, and other medicines which can be misused or addictive do require a physician's prescrition. |

There are certain prescriptive drugs in the US that are sold in Mexican pharmacies over the counter because they are not prescriptive over there. But never-the-less, in Mexico they do have prescriptive drugs and pharmacies will only sell it to you with a prescription from the doctor. Hope this clarifies. |

no, not true. you need a prescription to buy prescription medications.
the reason this rumor exists is because certain drugs that are available by prescription only in the US, are available over the counter in mexico. for example, birth control, some antidepressants, some antibiotics, etc...
like, if i had a sinus infection i could walk in and buy some penicillin type stuff. but when i had bad acne, i had to go to the doctor to get a prescription. so...it depends. |

They can give you a prescription on the spot but this is stupid. Medicine is medicine. Valium is medicine to be used to deal with situations like your mother just died or you found out you had cancer. Percocet is for if you hurt your back and the pain is so intense you can't move. |
