Do not drink anything but bottled drinks there. Even is the hotel tap says filtered do not. I made the mistake once.

Yes, the water in many parts is not good.

Moreover, whenever you travel outside your own area you should be careful not to drink the water....that's simply because water from place to place may contain different bacteria than your system is used to, which can cause problems.

So, a good rule of thumb is avoid the water when traveling....use bottled water or other beverages which are less likely to upset your system.

They call me ... Trixie.
Don't drink the tap water, and don't get drinks with ice in it. Stick to bottled water and beer.

I have been living in Mexico for 2 years now. When I first came here, I always was scared to even open my mouth while I was taking a shower. We have water filters, but I still refuse to drink the water from the tap. I boil water all the time for cooking.
For drinking I recommend these 3 brands of water.
Electropura, Bonafont, Ciel (coca-cola brand)
Have fun!

Some of the advice is true, some just pure paranoia. Your problem with water will depend completely on just where you are going.

It is true that in most of the country, the Mexicans themselves do NOT drink the water or make ice cubes from it either! We live in Mexico City and the government claims that you can now drink the tap water, I don't know of a single person silly enough to try.... Even when boiled, the water tastes overpoweringly of metallic chlorine. We all just use high tech filtering or bottled.

Bottled water is sold and used everywhere in Mexico. The good hotels and restaurants will only bring you filtered or bottled water and ONLY use filtered water for the ice makers. The ice thing is a paranoia holdover from 20-30 years ago. There is NO tourist resort area than would be stupid enough to serve you raw water ice cubes today when even locals wouldn't use them!

If you get off the "beaten path" if you end up eating in little towns with dirt roads and chickens running around, then of course you need to be very careful, but in the tourist areas, no. (Mexico may still be a "third world" country, but its tourism industry is definitely "first world!")

Many tourists arrive in Mexico, drink 24 beers, two dozen tequila shooters, eat like starving pigs, party without sleep for 30 hours, lay in the scorching sun without sun screen for 10 hours and then when they get sick and diarrhea they go, "Oh, I must have drank some of the water, or it must be the ice cubes, blah, blah, blah...."

Use your head, that's all... Oh, and have fun!

Yes, in some locations. The water in Mexico contains bacteria that people living outside of Mexico are not used to. Most large hotels have large scale water purifiers that help to clean the bacteria from the water. The bacteria in the water can cause stomach aches and cause you to spend the day in the bathroom. Suggestions: Don't swallow the water when brushing your teeth and drink bottled water. Enjoy your vacation!

I went to Mexico in September and I was told by my Doctor before I went not to drink the water. He said that it is because they use a different filtration system than we use and while they are used to it we are not and it will make us very sick. He said that they have chronic dysentery but that they are used to it. That is why the Mayan people are so short and have the large noses and large eye sockets. He said that even some of the bottled water is not filtered like ours. We took our own bottled water and didn't have a problem. My doctor was in the service and he spent quit a bit of time in Mexico so I figured he knew what he was talking about. Anyway, I followed his advice and stayed well.

It contains microbes we aren't used to. No more, per se, than ours. just different than our intestinal tract is used to.

You are not supposed to drink the water. Buy bottled water instead. The water isn't filtered or cleaned or anything so it can make you vomit and/or have diarrhea. Have fun down there!

daddy "d"
If you want to drop a load in your pants then go for it!

Brandon, it is true... you should NOT drink the water in Mexico. They do however, have bottled water for your convenience. Remember, that ice is made from their water, so if you plan to have a beverage with ice.. avoid it (even on the airplane coming home)

bud13kv
Please don't drink the water. You will most likely get sick. Buy bottled water and make sure you read the "source" marked on the bottle.
Be careful of drinks like coke from a machine, scotch and water, etc. it's not worth the chance as the Mexican sanitary dept. is not very good.

We travel to Mexico every other December to visit family. Thats the #1 safety tip I tell my daughters to follow as soon as we enter Mexican soil(we travel by land it takes us 36 hrs to get there). Stick to bottled water. You don't want to spend your vacation in the bathroom.

Daiquiri Dream
It is for the sake of your tummy, that you avoid Mexico's water. It is not regulated like water from the US. Most people who travel there get terrible stomach upset & relentless diarrhea for several days (because travelers are not used to the water).

*Bella Reveuse*
Plain in simple :

DONT DRINK THE WATER!

As you can already see, not everyone runs their water system the american way. So just to be on the safe side, and not run russian roulette on whether or not your mexico water immune, just stick to bottled water.

lpaganus
Bottled water widely available, ice in big restaurants made with filtered water, Look for Cristapuro signs on big tanks. Don't fret, Mexcians don't drink the water either.

NEVER drink any tap water there. Only drink bottled water or water from the five gallon containers, etc. You get seriously sick, so please be careful.

MM
Just stick to beer, and you will be fine
