Just see it this way, you were born with nothing, and will die leaving everything (talking what about money gets you) what really matters is that you have fun every day, make friends, and if you never been in Mexico, just try it, people is really cool. |

Depends where you are, If you live in a big city like Mexico City Guadalajara or Monterrey, your life would be like in USA obviously is not the same you know culture people things like that differ from where you are used to. Sometimes you can see the big differences between the people specially in towns , problems like kidnapping and the narco are the biggest one, an internal war not even exists! hahaha, I'm Mexican living in Monterrey. |

Life is tough everywhere. How would you do if you were poor |

Life is life, it can be good or bad no matter where you are!
There are more than three cities in Mexico where you will feel as in USA; the social differences are huge. But here we are! |

It is hard for people to get by, there are no jobs for the poor and uneducated. People in Mexico make do with what they have, and what they can get. |

I agree, you could live in any rich country in the world and poverty will still make life hard. Mexico doesn't have all of the welfare opportunities the US takes fro granted. However, the government seems to do quite a bit in the sense of homeless shelters (or either that or the homeless have the street smarts to find somewhere to live in). Poverty is especially hard for old people with chronic diseases like diabetes that they don't properly treat and end up with amputations and blindness. A lot of these people have children that blatantly kicked them out and don't maintain them. Most of them never thought about saving money for their golden years and end up living as beggars. The lucky ones end up in shelters paid by the government.
I agree about life in the big cities not being too different from the US. Mexico City has internet (albeit not nearly as fast as internet speeds in the US), cellphones with internet service, facebook is hugely popular here, we get more decent cable tv stations than you guys in the US for far less money, we get channels that show American tv shows in english (the American Network channel shows Oprah, Letterman, CBS news, Dr Phil, Rachel Ray, The Doctors, The Young & the Restless and others shows in raw english), iPhones, iPods, Starbucks, lots of American fastfood chains, comics conventions and many other gobalized forms of entertainment. There's an insane amount of doctor offices in this city that only cost a fraction of what they'd cost in the US and I've always found the services to be good. Out of the few things I can't get in Mexico City are a decent maltshake, root beer sodas, fresh cherries and Taco Bell. Costco fortunately sells a lot of imported food from the US but it can be expensive unless you buy in bulk. They even sell American style pumpkin pie!!!
DVD's can be somewhat expensive and we don't get nearly as much variety as in the US, but a lot of electronic toys do arrive here, albeit a lot of the stuff is so overpriced that ir's just better to go to Texas to buy it in an outlet. We get lots of international artists for concerts in Mexico City but I find the ticket prices to be insanely overpriced. It's almost twice as cheaper to go see Madonna in NYC than in Mexico City and we're not even taking into account New Yorkers earn far more $ than us chilangos. An average mexican citier would have to save cash for over half a year to see Madonna to give you an idea of how ridiculous it is.
However, living in rural Mexico is completely different. Life is slow paced, people are very polite and people get drunk a lot. Less fiddling with expensive toys and more about just hanging around with friends and playing board games and such. |

As you say, how would you do if you were poor? The things we take for granted in the western world?!...
I haven't been yet but my girlfriend who I emt in london, lives in Cuernavaca and Im going to visit her in February. The country minus the harsh facts of poverty, corruption, social segregation etc... ;-( not good!, the country looks amazing, and beautiful such culture and so many Mexicans I have met are so proud of their country!
I've been reading some of the things on here people have written, and if I beleived everything I read..would probably be a little apprehensive! lol but i go there with an open mind and hope that I love the country as much as I love mi princesita! |

Coming from a Mexican myself, it kind of depends on the person you are. If you're one of those Americans that are so used to always buying everything you need in the store near you, and depend so much on technology, then life won't actually be all that good compared to the U.S. Now if you're a calm, environmental kind of person, who doesn't really depend that much on technology, and prefers hanging out with actual friends instead of using E-mail, Myspace, Facebook, etc. and you really like festivals and parties that are usually held continually in Mexico, then life would be way much better. |

no its not. There is a lot of corruption in the government, kidnapping, and pretty much an internal war has been going on since 1910. The class divisions are huge. |
