i lived there for a year. i taught english, but i had a degree in education and another in spanish, this spanish degree is supposed to show that i know how learning a language works. and i do know. anyway, you can't expect to teach unless you are a teacher type. those jobs are easier to get if you are qualified becasue there are less NATIVE speakers. some schools will hire you "under the table" or as some sort of "educational exchange". this will avoid the gobs of paperwork to sponsor you as an employee.

otherwise, you have to find a company that will sponsor you. if you work for a company up here (in the USA or canada for example) that needs you down there, great. if not, there are plenty of college degreed people that do not have jobs in their field, so, it would not be easy to find a company to want to sponsor you. they have to prove that they have looked for a qualified mexican, and cannot find one.

thirdly, you can work with another mexican to start some business. this could be possible. find out what kind of service/business is needed and go for it. i met people who started a B$B for example, some do art (and sell their stuff to locals and worldwide on the net), or maybe some work in the tourist trade. if you don't know about that part of mexico which you are moving to however, the tourist jobs thing wont work. you can't just expect to start up something instantly this way.

i was going to start english classes in the garage of a friend of mine. my thought of doing that was...."hmmm, this may not be as easy as going to work with some school." so, i taught at a little language school.

the school used some sort of monies they had in with a cultural exchange "loop hole" to pay me, so no paperwork. i only had a 6 month visa, so after that you must leave and re-enter (72 hours outside the country before you re-enter) if you don't have the paperwork.

it can be done, but many professions are near impossible to get into down there. especially if you do not already have contacts to help you or speak fluent spanish.

i had a side business with a mexican friend of mine. we both were bi-lingual. we translated documents, but you can't expect to make much money there either. often the text is medical or other college school book pages that are not so easy to translate.

hope this helps.

Mexico Is home to one of the best Universities in the world (UNAM). Yes there is a lot of poor.

In my opinion if you want to work in Mexico you're better off staying in the US. But if you come to Mexico to put a small business, you will absolutely love it.

It doesn't really depend on what degree you have in college. Your success depends in the knowledge you have of life. Over here in Mexico you can have 3 doctorates in various subjects and be driving a taxi to get money. Or you can be someone who is really awake to the world around them and never finished high school and have an average income of $2000+ USD without even working.

It all depends on how good your life skills are.

Mexico has many university educated young people. Some have decent jobs, many work as waiters or clerks. It is extremely difficult to get a decent job, then, even professional jobs pay about 1/10th what they pay in the US. The only way a foreign citizen can work in Mexico is to first find an employer who will sponsor your work visa. he must write a letter to immigration stating he is hiring you for a job he cannot fine a /Mexican citizen to fill. And that is very unusual.

If you can find a job in Mexico you probably won't make more than minamum wage here, and probably alot less.I made $4.00 an hour teaching Engels and I was real lucky! Go for it!

To vacation - Come on down.........
To retire - great for the right personality

I would recomend coming to a small town, not a city. The cities are uglier, dirtier, they have a higher crime rate... etc.

You would probably have a better chance of teaching English or doing something alont those lines in a smaller community.

What state do you want to come to?

Depends a lot too if your Spanish is Fluent, Good jobs for foreigners here are really hard to come by. And forget teaching English. Everybody that visits here gets the same idea. Many educated Mexicans speak very good English here, and there is no shortage especially now with the world wide economic slowdown. You could possible run some type of dot.com business from here if you had one established. good luck, Come to visit and vacation.
