I think that if you pass the TOEFL you should be alright. I know that the schools often want 'native' English speakers, but I have a friend who is from Mexico City and taught English there for awhile. Her English is very, very good. You also might consider getting some kind of TEFL/CELTA certificate to buff up your credentials.

Passing TOEFL may not be good enough, but it depends on the level of your students. Probably for elementary school it would be enough.

usually TOEFL is a good start.

most english schools in mexico hire "Native" english speakers as english teachers..

If you are a native speaker then you shouldn't need a TOEFL though some places do ask one to take one. What will generally be considered more important is a degree. Otherwise you can still get work but the money is crap.

sparks_mex
Experience is the most important !!!

But you can teach with no credentials in the right places

You have a great advantage. You are a native speaker. I am sure you won't need anything related to your language skills as soon as people hiring you know you were born in the U.S. I am mexican and I tried to teach english at Harmon-Hall (a well known institution in Tampico, Tamps, an 800 thousand people city, 500 km south Texas) and I just had to take the TOEFL test, they hired me inmediately (although I decided not to work there), my score was 653. So I am pretty sure you have the chance to give english lessons in Mexico. Good luck, see you here

yes, that´s what you need to start

Absolutely, but you need more than 600 points in almost every institution.

Cambridge exams are also valid.
