Is playa del carmen a good vacation spot?

I am going on honeymoon in June. I would like to hear opinions from people who have been there or heard stories. How are the people? How is the food? Is it dirty? Things i would need to know when traveling there. I will take any suggestions if you have them, about eating, activities etc.

Playa is a great area, it is clean and very laid back and everyone is very friendly. Drink from bottles only, except alcoholic beverages the alcohol in mixed drinks will kill the bad bacteria

I suggest El Oasis (best shrimp tacos and Mojitos in the world) Babes is actually very good. El Fagon located across from Wal-mart is where all of the locals eat. (good and cheap)
There is also a place the locals call Super Carne, they serve a marinated flank steak that is great and cheap. Now this is truly Mexico so do not expect things to be as nice as the States. Most everything is outdoors with no a/c so be prepared. Karen's has A/C and the food is pretty good, La Parilla is good as well, both are found on 5Th. Food on 5th is fairly expensive the further you get off 5th the cheaper the food gets. Check out dining guide on tripadvisor.com for PDC.

Activities, Xcaret (.com) is lots of fun, don't take the tour, just take a cab only 5min. from PDC and purchase tix at the gate All-inclusive is a good deal the buffet is pretty good. Do go to the night show but do not purchase the dinner, it was terrible. Eat back in town or at the hotel that night. The rest of the tours, just take the tours. Playatrips.com has some good information. Tulum/Xel-ha tour is fun, Mayan Encounter tour, Chichen-Itza is great but it takes about 2 hours to reach it. Check out the cenotes. Take the ferry over to Cozumel 40min. ride. Snorkel over in Coz. Rent a car and drive around the Island, the back side of the island has a nice bar and restaurant named Coconuts, its cool.

Do not get sucked in by the timeshare guys, certain tequila shops are timeshare recruiting stations.

If you can go to Talum, just below Playa Del Carmen, to see the Mayan Ruins. If you like snorkeling, find a cenote' (spelling?), they are pools of fresh water, some have caves that you can swim into. Only drink the bottled water! The beaches are amazing!

stay away from time share sales people....

All inclusive? You will love it.

Just got back in january. awesome. Very trendy and eurapeon. Go to fifth avenue and shop, you can walk around and drink! Definetly eat at one of the many romantic resteraunts!

Cass Tours
I would recommend a hotel for Playa del Carmen that's all inclusive (that food is expensive). Lots of people trying to sell time shares though.
The hotels i would recommend would be:
RIU Playacar
RIU Tequila
RIU Palace
Royal hideaway playcar

I love Playa del Carmen and I live in Cancun...go figure.

Playa is more of a European type of village. There is a main street (5th ) that has shopping, wonderful restaurants and cafes. The town is very clean but it is filled with people who want to sell you timeshare (timeshare does work for some people!)

The beach is right on the 2nd largest coral reef in the world (second only to Great Barrier) so there is great swimming, snorkeling and diving only a short boat ride away.

Playa is also just across from Cozumel which is a quick ferry ride away. Xcaret (ish k ret), Xel-ha (shell ha) and one of the new 7 Wonders of the World are close by.

Happy honeymoon and have a great life.
