Is the crime in Mexico City really that bad? |
It's my first time in Mexico City. I stay pretty far out with family (about 2 hours from the center by bus and subway), so it takes me forever to get to places. I heard that it's not safe to go out here at night time, especially since I was told that people get robbed in the nearby park late at night and other areas. The entire area where I am at does not seem that safe. It kind of looks like the projects here. Lot's of factories around (called something like el norte).
So my question is, is the crime really that bad as everyone says? I don't do anything here right now at night time and would like to go out. But of course everyone can see that I am not from here and the stories I have heard kind of scared me a lot. Should I go out here or just take my bags and run. It's no fun here like that. |

the majority of the kidnappings everyone is so "afraid" about (like on Man on Fire) are done to rich Mexicans like politcians and business owners. Ontop of that, I believe laws have changed about kidnappings, giving people that kidnap a very long prision sentence or even life (even for a 1st time offender). The president in mexico has changed alot of things.
But I would be afraid of being mugged at night. In the day, I think you should be fine and I wouldnt worry so much. Just take precautions to keep yourself safe. Dont carry too much stuff or cash. I have never been in the city for more than just a day trip, but when I go I never have a problem. But I stay with family about two hours from the airport just outside DF. If you have any questions or worries, perhaps talking to the American Embassy would be helpful. Also make sure that your family know when you leave and when they should hear back from you. When I leave my in-laws house, I usually never leave alone or I tell them where I am going. |

im half mexican half american. i pretty much grew up in mexico city. the north of the city can be a little sketch, and yes, super industrial. It is also a little less safe than the south of the city. if you do go out at night, stick to populous zones, and like i said, the south can be much safer at night. people do get robbed, there is a lot of crime, but at the same time, you wanna have a good vacation. I suggest CALLING (not looking on the street) for a taxi, grabbing a friend, and go have a good time. just be aware of yourself and your surroundings and you'll be fine. :)
mind you- im VERY white with freckles and almost red hair and ALWAYS look like a tourist, its just a matter of how you carry yourself and no one will bother you :) plus- mexican people are WAY cooler than american people and MUCH more hospitable. just be open with them and you'll have a GREAT time.
just be smart :) |

I don't think so. I think it is just as bad as any big city. Just don't carry alot of money with you and travel with a friend and not alone if you are scared. |

I guess it is bad but it doesn't happen to everyone. The only bad thing that I've heard that's happened was when my dad was young he went on vacation to mexico city and while he was on a bus a guy put a knife against his stomach and stole his wallet. My brother and sister and many other family members go on vacation to mexico city frequently and nothing has happened to them. My sister carries a small pocket knife just in case something happens. |

Hi, well I went to Mexico City for a few days while I was living in Mexico and what I gathered from my experience is that is all depends on the area you are in. We went to La Zona Rosa and Polanco which were actually very wealthy and pretty areas. I felt pretty safe there and my Mexican friend and I would be out by about 2am and walked back to our hotel. Those areas seemed fine (La Zona Rosa has a high gay population). BUT we accidently messed up on the subway one day and got off into a bad area and that definitely scared me. I am 99% positive that we were about to get mugged because we were being scoped out by some street guys and they started to follow us so we ran away and grabbed a cab and left. THAT was SCARY. That was in a place at NIGHT called Geribaldi. I would just go to the richer areas because they seemed more protected and civilized. But, it is hard to say because it depends where you are livivng, I feel LESS safe in my US city than I did in Mexico. I avoid walking outside at night where I live because there are lots of armed robberies here in the American city. |
